ARE THEY REPLACING THE JEFFERSON NICKEL?

I have heard on this Forum and a few coin publications that the Jefferson Nickel will be replaced in 2003. Are there any more rumors out there. There seems to be alot of hoopla with the mint and the media when this takes place and I haven't heard anything. Also, regarding the new Registry Sets for the Jeffs.....I like the Proof Set 1938 to Date. When I started collecting Proof Jeffs this was my goal. I still like the idea of the two sets ('39 to '64) and ('66 to Date).

Enjoy your coins.......

    GQ,

The Mint suggested replacing the nickel by using the 1993 Jefferson commem obverse as the obverse and an eagle and a Native American on the reverse to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase. Congressman from Virginia immediately screamed because they don't want Monticello removed from the reverse and are trying to enact legislation to freeze the current design permanently.

    GQ:

Howdy, neighbor! If you do a search, there have been several threads on the topic of Jefferson redesign. I like Jeffs, as you know, but it is time for something different on all our circulating coinage. Besides, closing out the series should create a demand for what us stupid ole Jeff collectors have been stashing away. image (Although I do need more time to work on my post-64 proofs!) Cheers. Have a good Fourth.

New coins! New coins! New coins! Say it with me!

GQ: I also like having the "BIG SET" included when the sets get weighted. But I guess I'm confused -- which sets do we put our coins in? Say a collector has all the proof Jeffs with all the varieties (putting aside the fact it is a BIG MISTAKE not to have the two "reverse of" varieties of the early set be mandatory coins in the "with varieties set" -- can't figure that out for the life of me). What does one do? I imagine you can't put the same set, broken up, in the early set, the late set and the BIG set all at the same time. Does one choose? Does one wait to see where other top sets are going and go to the other sets so one can be "number one" (ignoring the fact that superior sets are listed one click away)? Should one follow the other top sets to keep the competition heated and real? Does one forget about listing the variety that is included ('71 "no S") so one can be king of the "basic sets"? Are we, again, supposed to react to where others list their sets? Is is better to have two "top" sets than one? How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

The creation of a host of new, overlapping (and partial) sets raises a bunch of strategic questions that I think present interesting "game theory" possibilities, but to me it detracts a bit from the straight "apples to apples" comparisons we have right now?

    Anyone have any thoughts?

    Oh, and Theodore Roosevelt.

I know he is a DEAD PRESIDENT, but he is the quintessential American, and he has been unfairly overlooked on coinage and currency. TR on the front, eagle on reverse.

Bully for you, BNE ... A portrait of FDR with that 'stache and monacle on the obverse -- textured fields, of course -- and what of the reverse? What would pair up with the man largely responsible for setting aside the federal parks we know today? Hmmm ... how about a bison?

Ya know, I was actually thinking a reverse commemorating Yellowstone would go very nicely on a coin like this.

Regarding the textured fields, I mentioned in a long-ago post that James Earl Fraser did a bas relief portrait of Theodore Roosevelt (in profile) in 1920, in memorial to TR. It has that same "rough" scuplted look as on the Buffalo nickel, and is gorgeous. I bought one of these memorial plaques off of eBay (you can still find 'em from time to time) and it would make the most excellent obverse.

The reverse bison might be too much, but what do I know? People seem to be lapping up the Buffalo commemoratives.

    Awww, come on. . . . Better than a pert-nosed Sacajawea!

Check out current auction number 890909202 -- a medal adapted from the plaque. The picture is bad, and it looks better in bronze, but you'll get the idea.

Actually I have it on good authority, that the nickel will be replaced with 3 cent and 2 cent coins. Now isnt that origonal ? Perhaps we could put the likeness of dead animals instead of dead presidents on the coins.

Possum! And skunk! With a reverse consisting of tire treads making out the Roman numerals II and III.

P.S. Cosmicdebris, don't you get ever tired of QEII?

  • The July 2 edition of Numismatic News page 1 "Nickel Design change in trouble". The article starts, "proposals for a 2003 Lewis and Clark commemorative design on the reverse has Virginia lawmakers up in arms"...

This maybe a 3 year design change. Obverse would change to a new Jefferson portrait. Virginia's congressional delegation introduced a bill to stop the change. Unclear where all this is going.

    Have a great 4th!!!

Hey, I live in Virginia...who do you want me to call...my Congressman? Senator? He's certainly not representing me when wants to keep Monticello on it! It should NOT be a Political Decision! Although, I agree Teddy R did well in asking for Indians! Let me at 'em!

I have heard from a high government source that the nickel will indeed be redesigned. Here is what they are considering, Liberty with a high relief head, carrying a facses in one hand and a bell in another, walking up some steps. It will be known as the FHFSBFBLFS nickel. Rumor has it that they are trying to locate a hub from the 1955 cent and plan on greasing down the denver mint mark. Should be an interesting coin. Imagine what the insert on the slab will look like. image

Edited: before anyone else says it, yes I have too much time on my hands this morning.
