Personal preference. I have just become a slabophile, I guess. I know that bucks tradition with ancients, but I just like how they look that way. I have some nice display boxes all ready for these.
I don't even really care so much about the technical grades.
Downside- it's expensive, and you can't fondle your coins. Not that I do that so much anyway, once I've had a coin for a while. I do get to fondle them a while before they are encapsulated.
Upside- though NGC doesn't offer an ironclad guarantee of authenticity (few authorities could, in this field), it is at least another layer of security, since they'll bodybag anything they think is suspicious or unverifiable. You get a nice label and holder for display purposes, and it doesn't hurt when resale time comes around.
None of this is a substitute for one's own knowledge and expertise, of course, but I still think it enhances the value of the coins, both monetarily and aesthetically, in terms of display. That's just my two cents- um ... two denarii- worth.
These images aren't fantastic, and NGC holds the copyright, so I dunno what would constitute "fair use", if any. But those pages are there to link to.
I am hoping that my teeny-tiny 10 mm coins get a holder like this, without the prongs. I dunno if that is an old or current style. I debated on whether or not to submit them but figured it's worth a try. Check out the price on that one, and compare it to my little Miletos Lion above. Mine might not be an obol like the coin on eBay, for all I know (I still know very, very little on the Greek and Archaic stuff), but wow. I have all of 26 bucks in mine! (I'm sure there is some seller optimism goin' on in that listing).
Ah, fair enough. For me I enjoy my ancients and hammered British stuff without the plastic. But then again, I am fortunate to have two pretty good dealers that I buy nearly all of those kind of coins from, so I don't think I need to get them into plastic as reassurance. I'm also "thrifty" and would rather just buy more round metal discs than plastic for my existing ones

Any particular reason why you're getting them slabbed though?
