Yo, Darksiders! Fresh meat! We might have a live one here, ripe for recruiting!

Read Monstavet's post over here.

Monstavet, if you clicked the link which led you here, congratulations on having the courage to plunge into the Dark Side, if only for a moment.

Consider this your very own personal invitation to enjoy the beauties, history, and variety we've all enjoyed for years.

What period in history, design themes, or countries might appeal to you? The Dark Side is a vast ocean of possibilities, open to all, with room for any budget and any collector preference. As I mentioned, we won't even require that you quit collecting US coins, since those are after all a subset of the Dark Side. But why limit yourself to just the Liteside? Once you learn some of the possibilities here, perhaps we can tempt you to stick around a while. Who knows, if you are like a lot of us, you may in time find US coins to become slightly boring by comparison. (What? They only go back a little over 200 years? Man, all of the Liteside is "Modern Crap" by comparison! Haha.) image

Designs? Oh, just look at some classic Italian, Swiss, or German pieces, to name a few. Wow, wow, and wow.

Darksiders- strut your stuff- show Monstavet here what sort of cool stuff can be collected. Tell 'im what it was that led you to the enlightenment of the Darkness originally.

Monstavet is apparently a veterinarian, which suggests one theme right off- "critters on coins". One series with critters on 'em are the popular 20th century Irish coins, but naturally the possibilities there are far greater.

For me it was mostly historical fascination that led to my conversion. When I discovered that even on my modest teenage budget I could buy coins that were 300, 500, or even 2,000+ years old, I was hooked. These days I'm still mostly a low-budget "trinket buyer", but oh, you should see some of the "trinkets" I've had!

Here on these particular forums, the Darkside is a smaller and tightly-knit minority, perhaps, but you'll find that in the wide world as a whole, we outnumber the Litesiders. Not that we'd gloat too much about that. Darksiders are almost always kind and gentle souls who are into coins and camaraderie instead of chasing a buck or trying to "one-up" their colleagues. We too fall prey to greed and egotism on occasion (we're still human, after all), but with far less frequency than our Liteside brethren, it would seem. Just ask the mods who have to police that other forum versus this one. No flame wars here- and trolls are seldom seen.

C'mon over and hang out for a little while. Did I mention we have cookies?

  • At the risk of striking up some new competition in the field of French jetonsimage, I'll post one for Monstavet -

Added-- It's really about history and art, which didn't start and end in the U.S.. We are who we are because of the rest of the world, and the events that led up to the colonization. I'm still very interested in English history, particularly the romance of the dark ages and medieval period.

Here are a few pieces I've had in the last year or so, all of which cost me less than a hundred bucks. Some were significantly less than a hundred bucks. Why? Because everybody else was out there chasing overpriced Liteside stuff, that's why. image

Silver, 70 years old, and PCGS MS68?! For mere peanuts I got this (in a good trade with a fellow Darksider).

    imageimage

I got the Swiss piece and one other coin in trade for this pretty Spanish toner, which again, cost me significantly less than a hundred bucks.

    image

Check out this 2,100 year old Roman Republican piece (sorry my pictures suck). NGC slabbed, silver, toned, with a cool sword fight scene on the reverse, and you guessed it... less than a hundred bucks.

Here's another one- ancient, silver, toned, one of the Twelve Caesars, and it even had my zodiac sign on it. How could I refuse, for ... wait for it... yep! Less than a hundred bucks.

Here is the emperor Florian. It's not the greatest looking coin in the world, but consider this. Florian, who ruled in 276 AD, was killed by his own troops, after a reign of 88 days. How many of these coins do you suppose got made during that 88-day reign? To the Litesiders, a 1916-D Mercury dime is considered "rare". How many more 1916-D dimes do you suppose there are by comparison with Florian antoninianii like this one? And when you compare it to the famous 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, of which what, 480,000 pieces were struck? It's almost hilarious. Because of course both of those Liteside coins will cost you big bucks. This Florian? You guessed it. Less than a hundred bucks. (Though only barely).

Speaking of ancients, this Licinius I bronze was not only high grade, nearly 1,700 years old, with nice patina and detail (check out the pupil in the emperor's eye! The little wisps of hair in his beard!), but it wasn't just under a hundred bucks. It wasn't just under fifty bucks... this piece cost me a whopping twenty bucks!

I could go on and on.

You'll get MUCH more bang for the buck on the Darkside. That I can promise you.

(And since you're more advanced in the career world and almost certainly have a bigger budget than I do, your possibilities may even be greater than mine... think about it.)

SO, Monstavet (or any other of you lurkers who might have followed the link here)... How 'bout it? Are you ready to feel the power of The Dark Side? If so, you've got a whole cadre of new friends waiting for you right here. Folks who have near-encyclopedic knowledge, and who're standing by to show you around, make suggestions, and cheer you on!

Oh, yes. And we have cookies. Virtual chocolate chip, anyone?

LordM, I have a confession....(really deep voice) "LORD, I'm your father"

Oh wait, I might have taken that analogy a touch too far!

Here is a little secret, promise not to tell. I already have a dark side collection. Perhaps collection is too strong a word. My wife's grandfather was Japanese. He left behind an interesting assortment of old Japanese coins and commemorative issues. Nothing too dramatic, but pretty cool stuff just the same.

I'll probably stay mostly a light-sider, but will likely be lightening up my collection and opening up to whole new possibilities. I've been shackled by that damned Type Set for too long! Lock up your pretties, Boyz! I'll be prowling for some cool new stuff in no time!

Forgot to add: Really cool coins everyone! I like Becky's thousand yen coin the best.
