I'm putting together a new layout for my British coins and wanted to see which people find most interesting or helpful. Should I build it by denomination (Type Sets), or by Ruler?

I'd say by rulers. When you describe a British coin, you usually say it's a "ruler denomination":

A Victoria crown; a George III soverign; a Henry VIII penny; etc.

    not usually:

A crown of Victoria; a sovereign of George III; a penny of Henry VIII

(At least, that's how I think of them.)

I agree with the above. When I look at British coins I like to see them presented in chronological order by ruler.

Yep, by ruler, and then denomination as a subcategory if necessary.

I say by ruler, because I collect more by monarch than denomination. For the most part it makes it easier to collect, now if I can find one of those elusive Alexander II pennies..

Ok, 75% by ruler seems pretty conclusive, I'll go with that.

I think it boils down to how many of each denomination you intend to have. As a collector of shillings and halfpennies together with some sundries, the bulk of coins listed are presumably going to be the two main denominations in which case I would have shillings, halfpennies and others. If the sundries total approaches that of the denominations, then go by ruler. If in doubt, put in a 'sort by' option.

By type, no sets, (I collect Roman republic which had no rulers!). By moneyer maybe but too boring ...

But, for British "modern" stuff .... ruler

I had to vote "by ruler" (indoctrination by Spink probably) but for pennies I've always wanted to see a set laid out from sceattas to 1953!

I chose ruler. It seems to make more sense and fun.

JCM - I just looked at your site, and I really like it! (That is a very nice selection of shillings you've put together there, by the way!)

Kudos to you, sir. Well done.

Thanks guys, Stubby, I am actually putting together a new site just for the British coins. I have started a layout by Ruler for Geo. III - Edw. VII because I have enough coins from those rulers to populate a page. I then have additional pages put in for Halfpenny Types, Penny Types and Shilling Types because I have a bunch of extras of those that don't fit into those particular rulers. My halfpenny type set, for example, includes examples back to Edw. II, but I don't have any other Edw. II coins so it would look funny to have it on a page of it's own. So far the page layout looks like this:

    Geo. III
    Geo. IV
    Victoria
    Edw. VII
    Halpenny Types
    Penny Types
    Shilling Types

I'll probably put it live within a week or so as I get time to populate it. Then try to get a couple of you guys to review to see if the layout is reasonable and easy to follow. It's impossible to get it perfect, but I would like it to be useful to most people.

I am not attempting to make this more difficult than it is- I basically agree with a type set by Monarch- I would just note that the Monarch type set approach would be reasonable for Milled and hammered coins
