Playing with the macro some more - color this time.

Pulled a bunch of slabs from my eBay box and did a quick reshoot tonight to see what differences I might come up with; tougher than dealing with raw coins. I didn't prep the slabs or do any angled shots. The only thing I did was move the lighting in or out a bit, depending on the coin. Total shooting time was about 10 minutes; the time to crop and mask the photos was significantly longer.

For each coin I'm first showing my old shots (or TrueView or Mark's shots, whatever I was using) and then my shots from tonight. In some cases there is improvement, and in others not so much. There were about 5 pieces that my shots turned out dismally which I'm not posting; those pieces will require much more work with lighting angles and position of the coin.

This was meant only as a "quick and dirty" test.

For the most part, I think my new pics are much more natural and realistic (than my old Olympus shots at least). Far less image file manipulation is necessary with the new pics to "try and get there" so the coins don't look as overly saturated or contrasty as my old pics.

You are making me wonder whether I should make more use of my macro lens. Most of my "subjects" are larger medals, though, and I find it problematic finding an appropriate distance from the lens.

The OLD images are so good anyway, that sometimes only the photographer appreciates the difference.image

  • Many thanks for the color pics. Some of the coins are just outstanding. Really great work! The 1912 Nederlanden coin is stunning.
Saturation levels seem to be much better as you describe?
