Ex John Quincy Adams Coin?

I bought this four years ago and was wondering if there was a way to see if this is the actual coin sold in this auction. Is it customary to record these sales and keep them? Would you suggest that I contact the Massachusetts Historical Society/ Would PCGS or another TPG attribute it if I were to document it. Irealize that it is not a rare or nice example of this coin, but it would be neat to know definitively that it was the actual coin sold from Adams collection. -Dan

There was a dealer on ebay a while back selling a lot of stuff from this collection with those tags - windsorantiquities, I think.

BTW, the second pic is upside down image

What were they selling? Were the auction tags the same as what I have? I have never done business with them. When you say alot of stuff what exactly do you mean? -Dan

I've never seen one of those "certificates" before so I can't comment on them. However, lot 164 of this auction did contain 9 coins from Salzburg. Because the lot wasn't completely itemized or imaged, I can't say if your coin was really part of that lot, but it seems likely.

That said, one would need to go to the Adams Family archives - probably at the MHS - to see if the coin was listed. It's possible that the coin was donated to the MHS by another collector. It's also possible that the coin is from the Adams collection but not from JQA, because the Adams collection was built by three generations of collectors.

Thanks Andy. How do you know the lot #? You either have an amazing memory or you have some good reference material. I really was curious about it more than anything. I think I paid a fair price for the coin regardless of the provonance(although that is why I bought the coin.) -Dan

It must've been well over a year ago that I saw those. There was a good mix represented, mostly European and nice but all average circ stuff. I don't remember any specific coins so I can't comment on yours. But I do remember those cards. And they mentioned that theirs were a consignment from a doctor or something like that in the DC area.
