I got an extra copy of J.G.Spadone's 1960 Catolog of Modern Japanese Korean Manchukuo Coins as part of the deal when I purchased some other books, so if anyone on the forum is interested, it will go to the first one who sends me his/her address by PM, for $7.50 with free shipping.

The spine is broken, but otherwise it's in pretty good condition. (I'm not sure of grading standards for used books, so that's just a description, not a grade. ) 5" x 7-3/8".

Everything from Meiji 3 (1870) to the date of publication is covered, with pictures, descriptions and related material. The numismatic philosophy of the times comes through in the comment that:

<< Circulated coins should be cleaned periodically like a gun, for preservation, attractive display and individual value. >>

Two days on another forum without a nibble, less than two hours here and I had two offers!

I too was shocked when reading those words in Spadone. Even so, it is a handy text.

It's a nice little book, I nabbed one on ebay recently. I skimmed the coin care section and it is as scary as what is posted above. I think it mentions the goal of having a homgenous appearing collection as part of the reason for cleaning!

Is the book written in English or Japanese?

Why is it important that all coins in a collection look the same? I wonder what Spadone's collection looked like.

Gotta keep your eye on that JamminJ guy, he's pretty quick to the punch.

Snaked me by 7 minutes.

Spadone was a US Army Master Sergeant from New Jersey, who was stationed in Tokyo for a number of years.

I knew a corporal by that name when I was in Korea in 1954. I hadn't started collecting Japanese coins then, wasn't in the same outfit, so I don't know if he did either, but it may be another example of "It's a Small World After All".
