K-223 CARNIVAL-1919 (Fasching-1919), Cast Bronze, 58.3mm, Wt. 68.2g, VZ
Created by Goetz to show his sentiment that the German people had no reason to celebrate Carnival in 1919 due to the political and economical turmoil in Germany at the time.
Obverse: The German eagle with a padlock on its beak and shedding tears is shown as a rock embedded in the ground. On his back a May-pole with couples dancing around it to music supplied by four musicians; on the left, a crowd of agitators listens to a speaker; in the foreground, a reparation figure swings a hammer to destroy the Kaiser’s helmet. On the ground, a Frenchman holds the eagle’s foot while and Englishman clips its claw (power).
Reverse: Devil’s head with serpents in place of horns; on either side, bombs girt by serpents, symbolizing Bolshevism. Inscription reads “Die neue Gefahr im Ostem” (The New Danger in the East). On ribbon, “Bolshevism.”

Goetz was a strong Nationalist (German Patriot) who was truly bothered by the loss of WWI and horrified by the Versailles Treaty. Goetz's medals at this time were primarily expressions of his emotions rather than a well planned intellectual effort. Goetz had no political ambition and never affiliated himself with any party. He had no other goals other than to express himself, and make a living. One has to discount the notion that Goetz, and others like him, helped shape the emotions of the German people. Rather, the emotions of the Germans, during the time 1918-1923, were shaped by the events themselves and by what was happening to the country.
I have a large number (15) of medals from this period (The Revolution and the Occupation of the Rhine and Rhuhr 1919-1923) that just came in. I will post them as I get them imaged.
