1972 Topps Football. What Carlos got for his set on Ebay

Well, I was curious and I added up Carlos' set on Ebay. He sold 278 card for $16,107.95. That is $4,000 more than Paul Deal got for his, and his was #3 one tenth behind MOSH. The kicker is Carlos sold 70+ cards outside of the Bay for more. Or maybe he kept a few. Paul only kept a few Dolphins so Carlos did well on his set. The most expensive card was a Lyle Alzado Rookie PSA 10 $600. The cheapest was $3.34 for Garo #115 on Ebay.

Sorry if this is borring to some but here are the cards he either kept or sold off outside of Ebay. Just look at the PSA 10's POP 1 that did not make it to Ebay. 25 of them WOW!! I am guessing he sold those for an average of $300 each. He had 9 high series and Ron Yary (HOF Rookie) Jim Plunkett (Heismann Rookie). It is just nuts what did not make it to Ebay. We are looking at nearly $30,000 for this set. Wonder how much he got for the PSA 9 Staubach rookie??? (no 10's of that card)

The column is card # - Name - Grade - POP - POP Higher

I sorted by grade and then its own POP --

This was a hell of a set!!!

    FYI

Last year I sold my 72 Topps FB set (#5 All Time) to MintState for $7700.00. Not anywhere near Carlos' set, but thought you might like know.

Carlos's set was considerably better than Paul's. Not that Paul's was a bad set, it was an awesome set.
It's just that the number of PSA 8s in Carlos's was near none. Carlos also had many more 10s.

Thanks for adding up those figures. Interesting.

While I don't want to divulge specifics, I can admit to being one of the lucky ones who managed a deal with Carlos off ebay. He appreciated my specific interests (or needs) regarding certain players in that set and I in return accepted his terms. He spent much time and effort in putting that set together and just having a piece of it is an accomplishment in itself for any collector be they 72, Team or Player specialists. I'm glad he did as well as he did on it and that I actually contributed to his cause.

I can only say it will be a long time before the pop 1 10's I secured come back around.

Thanks again to Carlos for what he did for the registry and my own collecting interests!

Bolt - are you going to put together a 72 set or did you buy some of the HOF Rookies? Just curious how far I am gonna tumble once his cards work their way back onto the registry. I bought four cards. I really wanted the Packers in 9 but most of them never made it to Ebay. I should have talked to him offline to get them

I was at the National but only for The Packers signing and a stop at Cameo and Mint State. Picked up 35 cards for my set in a quick two hours.

    Troy and Taylors 1972 Set

I have another 11 cards to add from the National but some guy has them registered and I have not scanned them for PSA as of yet. But that won't move me up on the list.

Not to worry about me entering the 72' set sweepstakes, I'm strictly a vintage Charger collector. My dealings with Carlos focused on this area which should give you some idea of what I picked up. I will be getting in on the 72 Charger set registry shortly (one of the few I've stayed out of up to now).
If you have any high grade Bolt cards 60-72' (especially 67-70) for trade or sale please keep me in mind.

I have been eyeing 72 FB sets or lots, raw. Graded is too pricey for me. And I think raw lots or sets are too pricey for me, due to the high #'s, so I might have just give up on this year and focus on picking up some 60's sets I need. The 72 is tough in high grade isn't it????
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

You are absolutely correct! So, along with this acknowledgement, here's a firm golfer's clap for all the folks a few years back who helped keep his set "the set" at the top of the charts. Without the generosity of many, my guess is this set would have been busted long ago.

Did that really happen? Did you guys pitch and give him money to keep his set together? That was incredibly generous on your part. I imagine now that your generosity has been repaid in spades with the sale of the set. Way to go guys!!!! It's so nice when a story has a happy ending.

And it was done with no strings attached.

Carlos was/is part of the Registry family and we helped him out a little when he needed it. Life goes on and hopefully his is a healthy and happy one.

I wish him all the best even without his 72 set.

I also had the pleasure of dealing with Carlos "off Ebay." I bought 2 PSA 9 Saints players in regular auctions, but I picked up the three pop 1 PSA 10 Saints (Abramowicz Hargett and Hollas) in a side deal. Got them in the mail today and they are gorgeous. And, as always, Carlos was great to deal with.
