Top Barber Half Set for Sale At FUN - January, 2016

MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
Its come to my attention that the current # 1 set of Barber Halves will be sold at Tampa FUN this January.
Yesterday, I received a flyer from Heritage stating that Dr. Peter and Mrs. Janice Shireman have elected
to sell off their wonderful set of my favorite Halves. Sorry to say.

As the U.S. Coin forum is set up for the discussion of coins and not to be used for the sale of coins - even
in inferrance - so I have decided to continue showing off the past top three sets of Barber Halves - here -
on the US Coin Registry account.

Please bear with me - I just installed Windows 10 - this could get ugly...lol... { Surprisingly, it went smoothly ! }

The earlier years : 1892 to 1903 sets were placed on the US Coin Forum, included in the "Mega Barber Thread".

The sets continue here with the year:

Top-end nice coins still do very well. The MS 65 common dates and over-graded coins, not so well. Seems like the CAC stickered coins do better than those without.

    Just added 1905 , 1906 , 1907 , 1908 , 1909 , 1910 , 1911 , 1912 , 1913, 1914 & 1915 Images.

All three major sets of Barber Halves have been posted - some [ 1892 to 1904 ] are posted on the Barber Mega Thread - Part Three,
where I had to stop - as the rules of posting coins for sale may not be posted on the US Coin Forums. Peter had just announced his
intention to sell off his Half set - and I moved the balance of the sets to the Registry Forum - where it is allowed to post coins for sale [ once ].

Editing this has become a chore.

PCGS querries me on each edit -
and blocks my edits more times
    than not.

I'm going to add the remaining three dates
as one post at a time.

This concludes the three All Time Finest Barber Half Sets [ up to this point ] .

There are two other amazing sets in the works, and I am sure the bidding will be
fast and furious once Peter Shireman's set crosses the block. @ Tampa FUN in January, 2016

Best of luck, Peter. Sharing your set was my honor. I have one or two favorites that I'll be
    seriously considering.

Great presentation of the three gem Barber halve sets, Mike. I know you put a lot of work into posting those.

There is a strong possibility that my set will be on display by Heritage at the November Baltimore show. I am planning to go to that show. More details as they become available.

Dr. Pete.... It was more an education I was looking for.
It was a bit time consuming - but it was also enjoyable
experience. I wish however that Dale's set was imaged by
True View. Hard comparing apples and oranges !

As a side note: which were the coins you bought out of
Dale's set and which came from Duckors. ?

I was sitting behind you, Janice and Harry one night at auction when
Janice raised your bid card to cut the bid on the 1907 Philadelphia .
It's one of my favorites in your collection.

    Hi Mike,

The coins in my set from Duckor's sale at auction are: 95-S, 98-O, 07, 08-O. Duplicate coins I picked up from Duckor's set as he upgraded prior to auction: 03, 06, 12.

Similarly, from Friend's set at auction: 94, 07-O, 07-S. Duplicate coins from Friend: 98, 03-O.

These two were sources of 12 coins out of the 73 in regular set, or about 16.5%.

Yes, the purchase of the 07 half at auction remains a favorite story about a purchase for our set. In January, it will be our turn to sit and enjoy the auction as it goes off.

My thanks, again, to you Mike.

As key as the Duckor and Friend coins are to our set, the John Hugon set alone accounts for 9/73 or about 12.5%. The Hugon auction was in 2004 and look at what coins came from there:

1894-O MS 66+ CAC with proof-like fields and cameo-type contrast and peripheral toning.
    1895 MS 66+ CAC
    1899 MS 66+ CAC
    1899-O MS 66+ CAC
    1903-S MS 67 CAC
    1906-O MS 67+ CAC
    1906-S MS 68 CAC
    1909-O MS 67 CAC
    1909-S MS 67+ CAC

These nine coins are some of the finest Barber halves for their date/mint mark. It was a case of really reaching for these coins. I am going to miss these beauties!

For anyone interested, my Registry Barber Half Set now lists which coins have been certified by CAC. I've had several people ask. My coin descriptions put this designation first, for anyone who would like to see.

The auction is in one more week. About half the coins will be on Wednesday night, with the rest in Platinum night on Thursday. Heritage divides them up based on estimated value. Looking forward to being at the show and seeing how it feels to be the one whose coins are being sold. It should be fun, and I plan to enjoy the experience. I predict the Wed night coins will be sold starting around 9 pm based on prior experience with how many lots Heritage typically sells per hour. On Thursday I expect my coins to be sold starting around 7 pm. All coins are being sold without reserve. Don't tell me that isn't at least a bit scary! Anyway, I hope the coins will speak for themselves and do well.

Anyone want to predict which coin sells for the most? The top candidates, in my opinion are: 92-O micro O, 04-S, and 06-S. I'm still working on what I want to collect next. I do like the half dollar denomination.

Come by and see me at Harry Laibstain's table throughout the show, and/or at the live auction. I will have a limited number of souvenir catalogs with just my set that I will autograph and hand out to my favorite Barber coin collectors.
