Waverly82 ebay auctions

Just wanted to share with the fellow board readers my recent experience in dealing with Eric who goes by the eBay listing id of Westerly82.

I recently had won approx. 16 thus 1962 Topps baseball cards from an auction that he had run in February of 2008.

As I am in the process of putting together a high end PSA 8+ graded set I bid very aggressive on all of his cards that were listed as "MINT".

Within a day of receiving the cards I sent them to PSA using their express service as I was very excited to see what they would grade out at as they appeared to be very nice.

Needless to say that when I received the grades back from PSA I was a little shocked:

- 9 of the cards came back as re-colored.
- none of the other cards came back graded higher than a PSA 7.

I then proceeded to contact Eric to notify him of what had happened and requested that he at least do "something" for the 9 cards that were re-colored.......and that perhaps he could contact the person that had sold him the cards to get some type of a refund as well.

Eric's response was that he would refund half of the eBay costs for the lot of cards when he got a chance as he was in the process of moving into a new house and was spending all of his free time working on the house and would be cutting back on eBay, which I felt as a fair and reasonable response.

Well, it now has been 3 weeks since his response and I have not received any refund back from him...yet he has continued to post many listings on eBay since then, so I guess that he has found some "free time".

I hate to play bad guy but should I post all negative feedback against him or wait a little while longer for some type of a response????????

And lastly.......I would hesitate to do any more business with him in the future if that is the way that he plans to conduct business.

This board is a great place for information, people post all the time about good and bad sellers on ebay, good and bad auctions, etc. You can learn a lot just by reading, I know I have.

If you do a search on waverly you'll see that some people here have had good luck and some have had bad luck with his cards. I guess what I would do is make sure I didn't let the 45 days expire with paypal to file a claim for not as described. It's possible they already expired, if so I would try my credit card for a chargeback.

Hopefully it wasn't too expensive of a lesson and you can get a refund.

Eric runs into a lot of bad sets. I'm sure he is struggling internally with enforcing his 7 day return policy vs. refunding your money.

    My experience with '63 Topps:

174 Larry Burright - Eric says: nrmt/mt. Solid card but there was some not visible in the auction scan print snow. I think PSA will call it a 7.
    PSA says - 8 nrmt/mt

197 Roger Craig - Eric says: Mint. This card had a weird (very) hard to see wrinkle along an edge. Since I saw it, I figure PSA would see it and I returned it.

327 Paul Foytack - Eric says: nrmt+. Rock solid. Chance at an 8.
    PSA says - Re-colored

328 Dick Williams - Eric says: nrmt+. I say recolored corner. This may not have been the case and I would have submitted it to find out, but he just wanted me to return it.

337 Dodgers Team - Eric says: nrmt+. I say nrmt with little chance of a six or an eight.
    PSA says - Re-colored

354 Zanni - Eric says: nrmt+. I say nrmt+. The centering is 65/35 L/R, but this card would not look out of place in 8 holder.
    PSA says - 8 nrmt/mt

442 Hartman - Eric says: Mint. The card mint, but was just a hair too short and had lots of print dots in the green border. I returned this card.

I ended up keeping four of seven cards. Two of the three returns might have made the advertised grade at PSA. One I didn't want to risk keeping (Hartman), the other (Williams) he wanted to stick to his seven day return policy and not have me submit it.

Please take a look and figure out if you can spot the re-coloring. So far none of the people who have found re-colored cards have been able to find the alterations. None of my re-colored had any ink bleeding on the edges.

  • I would have waited a week and than reminded him of my refund. Since 3 weeks have gone by, email him a reminder and see if he acts on it.

Thanks guys for the input....I just wanted to let others know about my personal experience.

I have bought other cards from him over the years and have found him to be an excellent eBayer but he tends to over-grade his items by 1 or 2 by PSA standards.

I have had some good luck with Waverly, but I do have two rules:

    1. I no longer bid on 62s, 63s, or 71s-I had too many come back recolored.
    2. I assume that any card listed as NM/MT or higher will come back a 7 and bid accordingly. I will occasionally get an 8 (best example is a 1960 Kent Hadley-I paid about $20, and it pulled an 8).

FWIW, I do not believe I have ever bought a trimmed card from Waverly.

I've purchased from him, and he's just another typical Ebay overgrader. Will never buy from him again.

I purchased from waverly several times. Nice looking cards. Send to PSA, some are PSA 8 but several are trimmed or recolored. Too much of a crapshoot. Now I rarely buy raw and no more from waverly.
I purchased 5 1971 Reds to start a team set, 2 trimmed, 3 recolored. I am open to suggestions as to what to do with them.

What is funny to me is that none of them are obvious recolor jobs. At least none of mine were. I guess it's more sad considering the prices he pulls.
  • I'm not a collector that expects everyone to expert about PSA or any other grading. Personally, I think that's over the top. I have a PSA 8 Kelloggs card that is so obvious that it is sickening how poor of a job grading...or they paid a favor, or the card was taken out and replaced in the holder (I don't know how they do that nor how to deal with that)...but it is an awful excuse for a graded card that cost me over $200 on an internet buy. It certainly left me with a continued distaste for the grading industry, however it occured. Should have been an easy 6 or even 5 with all the corner wear.

Anyway, I"m just a collector and not a graded expert nor do I expect everybody else to be. To tell the difference in a 7.5 or 7 is riduculous.
If your into that...that's fine. Collect what you enjoy collecting.

I've done business with Waverly many times and have always been pleased. HOWEVVA (as Screamn' A Smith would say) I would also add that I do not send a lot of cards in for grading. To the naked eye, I have always been pleased. Are they trimmed? I'm sure I may have some in my collection, cuz there are plenty of crooks out there with scams. So yeah...I may and probably do.

This .5 thing just instills my thoughts of a long term business plan on the part of PSA even more. In my opinion it bast..izes their whole system. Just wait till they decide to go to the "11" scale (to quote a Spinal Tap bit)...old fart...I know.

Anyway...just my 7 cents. Just enjoy what you collect. Take care.

It seems to be more than a coincidence that a few people on these boards have altered cards from Waverly82. Lack of response to remedy the problem just brings up more red flags. Thanks for the warning!

  • If you paid by paypal, why have you not opened a dispute yet? This is a no-brainer for a dipsute to be opened. He will respond to the dispute, as most sellers do....3 weeks is much too long to wait. I hope you haven't passed the paypal dispute deadline...
  • I did pay by paypal but it has been over the 45 day limit since the transaction was completed, thus I could not dispute the payment with them....hence why I went directly to the source.

I could however throw a bunch of negatives onto his eBay feedback status, but not sure if they would care.
