Man i remember how hot these things were back in the 90s. I remember buying a collection of 1984 topps racks with mattingly on front. I traded 50 of them to a guy in michigan for 6 boxes of 1992 fleer racks. I remember getting like $45 for olajuwon's..lol
Not nearly as hot as the Rookie Sensations, mind you, but both are gorgeous sets. I already got all the 1992 Fleer insert sets (sorry, my TL is not for sale); I just wish the 1993 insert sets were that easy to collect...
As hot as the rookie sensations were.. they never sold for anywhere near the fleer team leaders in basketball. I think the thomas peaked at around $60 when jordan was selling for $300.
The 92-93 TL's were interesting because it wasn't until the basketball year was over that collectors realized Fleer drastically underproduced racks and they seemed to be nowhere to be found. Also, no one cared about any series one sets (TL's were in series 1 racks only) because Shaq, Mourning and Laettner were lighting the basketball market on fire but could only be included in series 2 sets because rookies hadn't been signed until after tthe series 1 cards were made. The problem was that the TL was on the bottom of the pack so you could easily tell who it was, and all of the regular Fleer series 1 cards were worthless, so if you got a crappy TL then the pack was worthless (Going for around $40/pack at their peak). Also, they are very condition sensitive and tough to find in high grade.
I actually think the football TL are equally as rare as the basketball, but the starpower in the set couldn't compare. The TL craziness carried over to baseball for a little while with Griffey bringing as much as $50 and Clemens, Puckett, Gwynn, etc.. bringing $15-$25. However, baseball was much more common than the other sports. Do an ebay search for 1992 Fleer Team Leaders and see what comes up.
The team leader wasnt on the bottom of the pack. It was the 2nd to last card so in order to see who it was, you would have to put in the minimal effort of sliding the bottom card over.
I dont think I have ever seen a football rack box with the team leaders. The only 2 players I remember being any good from that set are smith and elway. I just bought a rack case of baseball from bbce for $45 of baseball and sending in some griffey's/mattingly's They are condition sensitive as well but the basketballs are much tougher to find centered, and the footballs are the worst for corners since they had the black borders.
Emmitt, Elway and Moon were the potential HOFers in the set, compared to Jordan, Malone, Miller, Hakeem, Nique, Isiah, Mutombo, Admiral, Ewing, KJ, and the Glide in basketball.
You're right Roger, they were the next to last cards. I completely forgot, but it was really easy to slide the bottom card over and see who the TL was like you said. Also, there wasn't always a TL card. Sometimes it was a worthless Larry Johnson highlights card.
I remember these like it was yesterday. I remember buying almost a full rack box at Kmart with my Birthday $$ back in 1992. I was 11 and was frantically looking for those Larry Johnson cards! I know I had almost a complete set including the Jordan! I only got 1 Johnson in the whole box and was happy as a pig in slop! I traded that Jordan on the school bus to a guy named Alex McCoy for 2 1987 Topps Jose Cansecos! I'll never forget that! I still, however, have some of those Team Leader cards put up somewhere. I will try and dig them out tonight.
I found 'em!! I had almost a complete set, but I guess I got rid of most through the years. Trading my Jordan for 2 87 Topps Cansecos is a bad memory. This has inspired me to build a set!!
