Picked up this toned Morgan today from the Wilmington show (Update: Grade in)

Common date, but I liked the toning. It's a bit more purpley in hand. Dealer stuck to his guns on price pretty well, but I still took it home.

    tough images...i think this is over-exposure ?

obverse looks sweet n colorful 63/64
    the reverse...wow
    surely 65/66

    64 is my guess

    sweet example regardless

  • Toning could carry it into 65. Way too many dipped out gems so the graders may give a bump to a nicely toned morgan.

    could be 64+ or gem
  • I was there today too, and saw a few toned , but now most dealers are asking very high prices and it's not even for monster toned coins. And at one dealers table I was looking at a nice rainbow Morgan , had a friend ask me what I look for , for example the green color is always a good choice and you can not go wrong. Anyway he was asking 350.00, swear to god I put it down to turn to another friend to say hello, he changed the price on me to 650.00!!!!!!!! With his pen and little sticker. I said your kidding right . He replied he priced it wrong, I said or could it be you have very good hearing . All I said was look over there (to another table) I'll be waving to you from there as I buy his coins. Lol

The coin even has the "pull away" effect around the devices.

    Looks natural to me.

Do you see many purplish Morgan's?

I've seen a lot of purple-ish Morgans. I wouldn't call that purple, though. My wife would say periwinkle, maybe. Women know so many crazy colors. She could tell me periwinkle was near orange and I'd believe her.

It's a different look, to be sure. But I like it and I'd be bummed it didn't grade. I'd also bet it would end up in a problem-free holder after a few attempts. Sucks.

<< <i>Here's my waste of a TV. Nice work by Phil... I love his work when he stays away from axial lighting for business strikes.

Lovely images, but I seriously doubt Phil is using axial light on much of anything. Tilt-shift, yes. But, there is no way he is doing high throughput using true axial methods (i.e., with an angled sheet of glass).

Surprised it didn't grade first time through. Couple things point to possible AT. The progression between orange1 and blue1. It isn't very smooth. Check out the area under "PLUR" in "PLURIBUS" on obverse. There are also no elevation chromatics; just the same pewter blue across the entire device. Not automatic AT, but elevation chromatics help towards NT. Given these, I still say NT though. Toning shadows present are a strong indicator for NT. Not surprised at the 64 grade. Maybe 64+ because of the toning on a good day. Sounds like you had some tough graders first time through, fair graders this second time.

Congrats on the nice pickup. It is an attractive eye appealing toner. I can see the 64, they grade 1881-s pretty tough on luster and the toning most likely mutes some of the luster. The reverse is better than a 64.

    yayy
it graded the 2nd time through
    yayy

i'd just crop out the cert# and replace it on the trueview
it would be neat if they did though...call us if the coin doesn't grade to reaffirm if trueview is still desired

i've been tempted to write a small note...trueview only if coin grades image

<< <i>I gave it a bump from 65 to 66 based on color. I think ms64 is to low IMHO. If it was blast white maybe but with that color I think it should get a 65 min. >>

This type of thinking is silly and the very reason we have gradeflation. TPG's should be grading the coin on its condition not it's color, you make the assumption with your thought process that everyone does or should like color and expect to get better grades for any sort of color, hogwash. Let the graders do thier job and let the sellers and buyers decide what the color is worth not the other way around.

As to the OP's coin it's nice but also looks graded correctly as a 64.
