1858-0 dime MS66 ex-Robison/RR/Gardner
As long as we're on the topic of gem "O" mint stars obv dimes, I'm surprised that the Gardner/James Stack MS65 1853-0 Arrows dime only fetched $10K. That's 20% under the Jan 1990 auction price. Back then the coin graded NGC MS66 (traded for $21-$22K after the sale) and also PCGS MS65. For a pop 1 finest graded $10K seems very light imo when you have more common coins like gem 75-cc quarters or gem 78-cc dimes bringing much more money. I guess the New Orleans mint dimes don't get as much respect as the S and CC mints, even if many of them are near impossible to find in gem grade.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
<< <i>I like the 41-0 dime also, though not quite fully struck. It's very hard to find rarer date gem seated O-mint "anything" that is fully struck. This 58-0 dime is about the best struck rarer date, gem New Orleans mint seated dime that I've run across. It's a little better struck than the 41-0 and still not quite full. The 41-0 is the way these coins should come. If they look much different the odds favor something less than fully original.

I was strongly considering that coin as my present example is a MS63 but wanted to wait for some other coins. If given a second chance I would liked to have purchased that coin.

You should have bought it back in 2004 when Heritage auctioned it for me. Owned it for 18 yrs after paying a record price for it at 1982 Robison. It only went for around $9K all in when Gene bought it. It was NGC MS66 then and PCGS just would not cross it on several attempts over a few years. I even remember showing that coin to Larry Whitlow around 2002-2004 and he did not like it (ie "too many marks, too dark, subdued luster"). NGC holder bias can do that. Now that it's a PCGS MS66+ CAC pop top.....it's a "different" coin. You gotta love it when the holder means everything....and you can't get it into that holder.
There are a number of MS63-MS66 1858-0 dimes out there now...most over-graded imo. But I don't think any of them have the overall quality of the Robison coin. There are probably less than a dozen truly gem 1840-1852 New Orleans mint dimes with the right look. This 41-0 is one of them. Same comment for the quarters though there might not even be more than 4-6 of those out there.

I have the Eliasberg 1852 O also, it is in a MS65 NGC CAC holder, PCGS wont cross it because that would make it the finest known PCGS coin. I am guessing they also won't cross Fortin's NGC either other it also would be finest known.
I used to care about the plastic now I am very content to own the nicest coins I can find, regardless of the holders.

<< <i>The 89-S doesn't make a 66 in your opinion?.... >>
I would agree that the eye appeal could bump it up to a MS66 but the surface quality of the obverse is high end MS65 and the reverse is at least a MS66 possibly a low end 67.

Yeah, that's the game these days. I've had some finest knowns in NGC/cac holders and could never get the cross. The only way these days is to send them back raw. Us little guys don't have the mojo to get 'er done. A coin like that would do better if included with a bunch of other very nice original gems from a power submitter. At least that's my 2c based on 26 years of submissions. And you can't also forget that PCGS is a couple tenths of a point tighter on raw coins as a rule. It all makes a difference. My biggest swing ever on a seated coin was 3 raw submissions of an 1838-0 seated dime back in 1988 (NGC 64, PCGS 63, NGC 65). That was the 1st ever graded 65. Had PCGS not 63'd it on the 2nd attempt it NEVER would have been sent back for a 3rd look. That was just to get back to break even since I paid solid MS64 money for it out of auction to begin with. There would have been no reason after consecutive 64's....at least not in my feeble mind.
<< <i>she is slim on the no drapery dimes (1837-1840) gains a little "baby fat" for the with drapery dimes (1840-1860) then slims down again when United states of America is moved to the obverse (1860-1891) in 1840 she starts out thin then gets chunky, in 1860 she starts out chunky and slims down >>
You should see the 1841 "No Drapery" Proof which is from a different hub with more graceful proportions. I consider it to be a pattern struck from a revised hub, probably made by Gobrecht to get back to his original design, but never approved.

I think you are right but for the next many years NGC can have the bragging rights of this coin being in their holder as I am not bothering to send it in. My duplicate is a MS62 PCGS so I have no real need to upgrade this for my PCGS set.
It would seem not all the best coins are in PCGS holders.
