Forum blast to the past: "The $40,000 fingerprint"

From when the new forum was only a month old in March 2001 Link.
Great story as only truthteller could tell it. A few of the details were a little off, as we later learned, but chalk
that up to poetic license
BigMoose mentioned in a later post it was a PR69 Indian cent, and Stewart Blay confirmed it was a
"1901 Proof 69 Indian cent that I remember seeing in Andy Lustig's case at the 1989 Pittsburgh ANA".
And from Scott Travers book "How To Make Money In Coins Right Now", as pointed out by forum member Kranky,
an excerpt from an interview with David Hall:
TRAVERS: Wasn't there a Proof-69 Indian cent that you certified and the coin grew a spot after it had been
certified?
HALL: $50,000! It's in the grading room -- in the grader reference set. And on the holder, we have typed:
"The $50,000 fingerprint".

The coin was around in the pre-digital days but I agree it would be cool to see.
Maybe if we ask David Hall nicely he could have it True Viewed for us
<< <i>"This thread is basically pointless - without pictures of the offending coin!"

I would love to see TrueViews of the entire graders reference set.

Ha, we're old.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I respectully disagree.
I had not known this story and found the original threads prose entertaining enough to justify the topic.
Aside from some minor discrepencies, and, it may not have been the grader at all! It could have been the tech who snaps the coin into its tomb, or even someone connected to the coins submitter.
Makes a better tale to pin it on a grader though.

Lakes - just about everyone with a Feb 2001 'joined date' belonged to the old forum
and were grandfathered in to the new server. The old forum was only around for a year or
two if I remember right, with the earliest posts basically one-on-one questions to D Hall.
It got a little more lively before they upgraded to the new forum format.
<< <i>Maybe Phil can take a trip to the grading room and get some photos of the coin to show? >>
I think our chances of getting an image of this coin are slim and none,
but it would be very cool to see what a 69 graded IH of any type and any
changed condition looks like.
That would be one wild coin - I had a P68R IHC once - can't imagine a P69!

Are you really going to make me read that thread again???
