Old NGC No line Fatty holders- safe to leave coins in?

NumisOxideNumisOxide Posts: 10,997 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a deeply toned colorful 1876-S seated half dollar in an NGC MS60 old fatty holder I picked up several years ago from DLRC. If I leave the coin in the holder is it going to tone darker?

Comments

  • It could. NGC did not pay particularly good attention to using inert paper inserts and white silver coins are known to tone (nice colors) in the holders.

I've owned such coins for well over a decade and feel they are all stable as I've seen no further progression.

Is there any truth to the rumor that NGC used recycled Taco Bell napkins for their paper inserts?

PerryHall, did you ever ponder the possibility that Taco bell used recycled NGC paper inserts for their napkins?

Maybe you just answered your own question, you said you had it for several years and I assume would have mentioned it changing in the interim if it had, well did it? >>

Looks the same. I think I bought it at auction around 2006.

OK, so whilst in your possession for almost 8 years it hasn't changed a bit, that is a good sign. I will admit that the ngc no line fatty coins that I own may have been toning in the holder due to the blue's and reds but I believe that maybe be do to the enviornment coupled with the older holder rather than solely the older holder. Again I have highly toned coins so some may have gotten added toning from the holder but whilst in my collection zero have changed but I have only started collecting in 2005 so like Coinjp it is too short a time period to know for sure. >>

Actually it was 2008. I just love the toning, wouldn't want it to darken.

you guys are way to much lmao
  • I think it's safe unlike the taco bell napkins......those should all be discarded once the sour cream has been removed from your chin image

Store them in intercept shield if you're concerned.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

As long as the slabs are stored correctly, they should be A okay! I own several and they havent changed to 20+ yrs.

Many years ago, I had a bunch of blast white MS 63 to 65 Standing Liberty Quarters in NGC no line fatty holders. They all started to rim tone in gold at about the same time. I was concerned with the quick progress of the toning. I called NGC and they said send them in for review. I did this, and they all were returned to me blast white (no toning) in new holders at the same grades. That concerned me and I have been somewhat reluctant to purchase coins in NGC holders since that time.

It was many years ago when I was living and practicing law in North Idaho. I have lived in Wyoming for the last 13 years. The coins were all stored in a safe deposit box at a bank (FNB) that is now owned by Wells Fargo. They were stored with a bunch of PCGS graded Standing Liberty Quarters in the same box. I remember a 1924 D, 1925P and a 1929 D (NGC graded) that all dramatically toned on the rims. I had about 30 of the quarters at the time. Do you need any other details?

It is not uncommon for coins to go bad in these holders. Crack it out and submit for higher grade?

Seems to me an MS60 grade could only be improved by a little intra-holder chemistry...
