I thought that having the cert, outside plastic, and outer box, all indicating US Mint issued, was a bit out of line. They were obviously never issued like this and he just took apart a much later date set and inserted his coins. He hid the original printing and put stickers over them.
I thought that this was really nothing more than trolling for a newby with altered packaging.

I do not see this as a con at all. The seller makes no claims of this being a Mint product. That little slip is an after market slip, too. I do not see anything on it indicating it is a product of the Mint.

I guess my imagination ran amok.

The seller is being deceptive and preying on the semi-knowing. If he weren't being deceptive, he would state in the listing, at least, that the display pieces are just that....for display and did not come with the coins originally. Also, he wouldn't use "mint set" in the title.
To say he isn't deceptive, at the very least, is quite....remarkable.....
i see nothing "misleading" or fraudulent about this listing. i buy nothing from the mint and it doesnt look like mint packaging to me. perhaps there is someone out there that would be DUPED into believing that this could be the one and only mint set from 1949 that was issued in a plastic case. sorry, i dont see the crime.
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

I am not surprised.
Few, if any, folks on these forums would get taken in. A kindly relative of a numismatic person with the best of intentions, may know just enough to be taken in as they get someone a gift.
If a seller wants to play games like the one linked does, then it is a seller I would be wary of and buy nothing from. They have every opportunity to add just a little info and state "after market holder", or whatever they want, but they position it as a "MINT SET" (it is a "year set") and use a genuine US Mint holder from a later period. Illegal, no. Deceptive, yes.
He has some nice raw coins and does a good promoting them. I may bid on a few for the junk box as its been getting low from the last few shows.
As far as his put together mint set, so what? I am more interested in the coins than the packaging LOL. You mean there are people who would believe the USM made these holders 64 years ago LOL? I see nothing wrong with what he is doing - its called marketing.

I agree, I don't see the con. Just because it's an aftermarket holder?

a 49 mint set is a 28 coin monster set.
this looks like a bunch of coins thrown together.

This is in an OGP mint set plastic case and outer black cardboard holder with a sticker over the original info.
