Cool Roosevelt dime find at the Austin City Wide Garage Sale

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 7,939 ✭✭✭✭✭
I try to go to the City-Wide Garage Sale from time to time, just to see if I can find deals on coins, fountain pens, and watches. Usually, it's all a bunch of overpriced junk, but Saturday it finally paid off- do you see what's missing? This is the first one I've seen in its natural habitat:

The Philadelphia Mint forgot to punch an S mint mark into the die before they shipped it to San Francisco. Nobody there noticed it.

What Capt Henway said. The Mint made very, very few proof sets with one coin missing the S. There are No S dimes for 1968, 1970, 1975 (super-rare with only 2 known), and 1983. There is a No S nickel for 1971. And there is a no S cent for 1990. A regular proof set from one of these years is worth around $5. A no S set is worth $1,000 and in the case of 1968 probably $25K and 1975 the last one sold for $350K.

It was a cherrypick. They had a whole box of proof sets and it was in with them.

I planned on keeping it, at least for a while, and leaving it in the set. Then I showed it to a dealer friend of mine and he had to have it. He made an offer I would have been stupid to turn down. It's going to be a very merry Christmas. I think he plans on keeping the set intact, which is good IMO.

FYI- there are a TON of nice varieties to be found in 1968 - 1971 proof sets- this is why I pay particular attention to them. For 1970 alone, there is also the small date cent, doubled die halves and cents, an RPM cent (I just sold a PF67 example for almost $50), and others.
