UPDATE: mid-August 2012 Stolen Credit Card (CC) Info ...

UPDATE Thread for Everyone
Re:
1. I didn't go to Philly, but my CC has been hacked
2. credit card numbers stolen at Philly ANA
===========================================================================
FAQ
0. Was it a particular bank???
NO
it was BOTH credit cards and debit cards. Card names ranged from AmEx, Citi, Discover, Bank of America, Chase.
1. Was It ANA?
NO
more than one person confirm they are not ANA members.
2. Was it radio scanners, skimmers, or RFID?
NO
more than one person confirm they do not have RFID and too many "hits" are coming from all over the country for it to be skimmers or radio scanners.
3. Was it being in Philadelphia or the Philadelphia Area?
NO
see #2, we have people who were in the midwest and west coast who were hit and never left their home states. The victims are all over the country.
4. Was it a grading site?
PCGS, NGC and ANACS are ALL ELIMINATED
more than one victim confirm they never did business with either of the three.
5. How about coin supply or book web sites or dealers?
100% NO
just like the grading companies, some names were thrown around but all were cleared. more than one victim from each name thrown around proved NOT to be a customer at the various discussed sites.
are you sure? YES! It is a 100% NO for the friendly local online place of business. I personally went to a lot of trouble annoying some nice people to eliminate all of them with certainty.
6. How about a big name like the US Mint?
NO
more than one victim said they could exclude the US Mint.
7. We're running out of obvious names.... how about eBay or PayPal??
NO
interestingly enough, more than one victim confirmed they did not use said victimized card for eBay nor PayPal. So, while also widely used by many, they are also both eliminated.
=======================================================================================
=======================================================================================
Conclusion
We have what I'm calling some "missing link" people who seemingly hardly used their cards anywhere online and one not at all online.... plus a vast array of others who can be 100% certain their cards were not used at one site or another.
ALL Web Sites Discussed have NOT been hit
8. What do I think is going on then?
I think LanLord hit it right on his second guess.....
a major credit card "clearing house" or "card processor" has been hit and it caught enough people who also happen to be coin collectors in the mix. These big businesses process the transactions for the big credit card firms. They have been targets and victims in the past and it looks like they got hit again.
Fortunately for all the coin firms.... I see NO coin firm connection nor "location" connection (not philly... it's not.. definitely not)... not any RFID scanner ... not card skimmer connection.
Re-read the above.... there are too many people all over the country hit. Some didn't leave their state. One even doesn't use their victimized card online at all, another person went to only a limited number of sites. Plus there are individual people who can rule out the various other suspected sites.

Conclusion of the Conclusion:: NO coin firm web sites were compromised. 100% for Sure.

(I can't say it enough.)
At least no one got bammed for publically discussing business suspicions here. We got answers with quiet discussions behind the scenes.
So, those who's credit has been restored.... happy shopping and here's to hoping the "clearing house" plugged their hole.
for those with the dreaded "debit card" burden still in effect..... well, we all need to ask why it takes so long to reverse bogus debit card transactions versus bogus credit card transactions. Here's hoping the banks wake up to the fraud on the debit card transactions soon and reverse them.

<< <i>I'm not sure it wasn't something coin related. Coin types probably make up some infinitesimally small percent of CC holders. Yet of the few hundred active posters here, it seems like roughly 10-20% were hacked. >>
I leave it to our "missing links" who eventually came forward and said "that card? not online..." or "just at the mint" (while others were also saying "no mint for me.")
It's not a coin site, and I feel 100% certain it is not even a web site because of the so called "missing links." They either did not shop online with the card or used it minimally online at a small number of sites... all of which were eliminated by others.
No Way Out: Stimulus and Money Printing Are the Only Path Left
<< <i> Also the possibility that a major financial player or bank got hacked. >>
ooops...
need to add that one in the FAQ
Credit Card and Debit Cards were hit
AmEx, Discover, Chase, Citi, Bank of America were names of cards
It wasn't one bank's cards.
<< <i>By chance did all the hacked people buy the original five 5oz ATB sets from one of the original 7 or 8 major distributors? >>
No.
BTW, Ms. M., my VISA was a Capital One, if that matters.
Thanks for the update, and work to put this together. If nothing else at least it feels like it wasn't coin-specific.
Lance.
That thought had crossed my mind too, but I'm certain it was not done with my debit card.
plus there is the possibility of stopping someone else's checking account from being drained from fraudulent debit card use.
also... many, but not all, of the original 2010 ATB places did not take cards.
How about being registered with Teltrade, Heritage, or another auctioneer?
It seems to me too many coin people have been hit for there NOT to be a link. Perhaps one or more of your rule-outs
forget they once registered or did business with a particular company or site.
If it was a CC clearinghouse or processor,
this would have made national news with many more involved.
very well done and thank you for getting to as much of the root of the problem as we will probably ever know.
I think I'm going to go back to bartering, an abacus and walking as it appears nearly all our high tech creature comforts just seem to end up causing grief, heartache and trouble!
Thanks again!
