This thread is for the REAL COIN GEEKS! image

I would like to thank RWB (Roger W. Burdette) for this source of enlightenment and entertainment. Thanks Roger! While doing research at NARA, he came across this really neat hand written document titled "Statement for the Life of Dies for 1896. U.S. Mint San Fransisco". It lists the number of obverse and reverse dies used for each denomination struck at the San Fransisco Mint. It tells us how many coins were actually struck WITH EACH DIE! Then it also tells us the average number of coins stuck with each obverse and reverse die per each denomination. Something else we can gather from this information is the possible ERROR RATE or RATE OF REJECTION per denomination. If we look at the MINTAGE numbers listed in the Red Book we will see that those numbers listed are lower than what is listed in this document since most problem coins were pulled and melted.

A small glimpse into what was going on within the San Fransisco Mint in 1896.

Side note....I wish I had information like this for 1916-1945 but I am told most of this information has been lost or destroyed. image

Keyman - thanks for posting, it is very interesting information that answers a lot of questions regarding die usage at the Mint for that time period. For the First US Mint, information to this detail is not available, it is up to numismatists to identify all of the dies used and the surviving numbers for each die pairing. The rejection rate for early US coins cannot be calculated with the available information.

You should have put "ebay" in the title to get more interest. image
