Heritage sent me the wrong coin
I won this: Lot #: 19338
Clearly the serial number is 1184913. But what I received was this:

What is the right thing for me to do? I like the coin I received, but should I really put up with this sort of thing? And maybe out there is a collector who received "my" coin instead - is he happy?

<< <i>The image displayed is a stock photo of an identical coin. The coin you will receive will be the exact same date, grade, mint mark, grading service and quality. Only the serial number will be different >>
<< <i>Am I missing something here? Is there something in the fine print that Heritage doesn't have to deliver the coins pictured in the lot but can send me something else? >>
Only if you consider the auction description to be the fine print, I guess. From the link provided:
1993-W 50C Bill of Rights Half Dollar MS69 PCGS. PCGS Population (1229/90). NGC Census: (786/160). Mintage: 173,224. Numismedia Wsl. Price for problem free NGC/PCGS coin in MS69: $19. The image displayed is a stock photo of an identical coin. The coin you will receive will be the exact same date, grade, mint mark, grading service and quality. Only the serial number will be different. (#9668)

<< <i>I was about to say...does it matter? >>
Not to me. If anything, the coins delivered are even finer than the ones in the auction pics.

<< <i>We actually have a negative on eBay from a bonehead that left it because he did not get the pictured coin when the description clearly stated "Because we have duplicates serial numbers will vary". In the business of modern coins this is commonplace. As someone else here stated no one that does volume could possibly take images of every modern coin that are all essentially the same and still sell at decent prices. Unless of course if they just had too much time on their hands and making money was not an objective....

Indeed when ebay upgraded the requirements for selling coins a few years back at first they didn't have an exemption for modern coins and wanted a photo of obv and rev for every one sold. I worked with my rep and showed him how many thousands of photos he was talking about and in some cases (such as 4 coin presidential sets with 8 photos for $29) the cost of the photos and cataloging them would be more than the cost of the coin. I think you were involved in that negotiation too.
Now ebay does not require a photo of each modern coin and I approve of the practice at heritage too.

When I use stock photos on eBay, I use Photoshop to write "Stock Photo, Example Only" as a watermark on the photo. It saves me from depending on eBayers to actually read the listing information.

if you stated that in the listing then the buyer is in the wrong and you should have contacted ebay for a feedback retraction
also taking images of every coin is easy and does not take that long, having taken over 35,000+ images in 3 years i know this very well - nikon d90 with sigma dxg lens
and in 10-20 minutes can easily zip out i don't really time myself bit has got to be a couple hundred easy, granted i am not applying for photographer of the year award but have received
many praises from buyers/lookers for the quality i do present, and if you are photographing and not scanning, kudos to you, hate those lazy, cheap bums that scan $10k coins, i mean cmon
volume isn't necessary for nice cash flow either which leaves more time for other things, just sayin
still on your side about that ebay bonehead
.
and to be on-topic, is was right there in the listing, although i admit i rarely look for that kind of thing, but i also don't generally buy things that can be sold as bulk like that

so long as there is a return option
i've seen all types of coins in all kinds of compsitions in all kinds of holders in all kinds of grades and there is one thing that is absolute
they are ALL different and open to interpretation as to the grade, not just what the holder says and if one cannot view the item, one cannot accurately ascertain if it is what they want
but that is what a return option is for

Yes
My way is the effective way, so my way isn't my way at all.

Do you suppose it might be possible that other people would have developed a system different from yours, that's more effective for them?

i would agree with that. maybe that person wanted that one for some reason. ask them whats up with that would be the right thing to do

Yes sir I am. We aren't perfect and neither are all of our customers. Most of our customers are the bomb. A few every now and then are awful and we politely invite them to go elsewhere. That's my style. No BS. Some may not agree, but that's OK. I'm not trying to please 100% of the people because it isn't possible. Keep in mind, this person never even asked if we could send another coin. No communication, just a negative.

that and if there are issues like spots or fingerprints that many people are turned off by, then they need to use actual photos.
MS65 from hits > MS65 from spots, in my book.

I know several people who run their own companies and one thing they agree on is that it is occasionally in their best interest as an owner to encourage some customers to take their business to a competitor.
The other is, "The customer is always right" to which I do not subscribe. From my experience in disputes with customers (which is infrequent) I think the customer is right about 70 percent of the time, wrong about 20% of the time but worth making happy anyway because they are exceptionally nice and/or repeaters, and dead wrong and/or abusive about 10% of the time in which case our best scenario is for them not to return.
