Idle Times at the Colonial Mint

This is a coin that I purchased for a customer, and since I have begged him to sell it back to me for my own collection. This must have been a boring day at the counterfeit mint building!

Cool. Did that one also come from Mike Ringo's collection?

No I wish it did though! Mike Ringo sold most of his error pieces before he passed away. I found this piece at the EAC Convention in Annapolis in 2010.

Was the V of GEORGIVS first punched upside down and then corrected, giving it those "feet"?

Yes, most likely. It seems on a lot of these that the engraver punched his A punch into the die and then polished away to make it a V. Sometimes they didnt, and you get an upsidedown A instead!
Whatever. They did what they had to do.
Love the coin!

<< <i>Seems like it would make more sense to make a "V" punch and then, if you needed an "A," turn that upside down and add a crossbar since adding a crossbar would be easier than removing one.
Whatever. They did what they had to do.
Love the coin!

Actually, very good point. That makes a lot more sense
