I tried to report item but I gave up. No watchdog category and I didn't receive anything fraudulent.

Too the inexperienced collector/buyer,reading this forum, it may be helpful to briefly explain why you think they are fakes. More info the more people will understand and learn about such things. That is one of the reasons for the forum.

I am a complete and total novice at coins, and I wondered this myself. However, doing this certainly helped...

Left side = eBayer. Right side = Heritage.

Pretty easy to spot differences with the stars, the inside edge pattern, the motto, the date, the nose, the eyes... Heck, everything is wrong, really.

I was going to suggest that if you hold up a picture of a coin next to the one in the auction you cant tell the differences. When you see a lot of coins, a fake comes along and its almost like when you notice something is wrong with an old friend or family member, you can tell some thing is up.------------BigE

Good thread for all, and thanks VibrOnic - that was a slick comparison.

Now I wonder how the fake was produced - I mean, it looks like he even took the time to wear it down, clean it, and then AT it, giving it a look that a raw, genuine coin might have (I see raw common dates like this at shows all the time!).

Great question and good point. I really didn't want to start another eBay thread, but for the alert.
Some things popped out immediately as yellow flags:
    *Overseas seller.
*The Big Three, in one auction, in high grade.

Even if one of these were in the lot alone, and the seller was from Breadbasket Iowa the look of each coin is wrong to a Barber collector. The type style of the date and lettering is the immediate proof.

At the end of the day vibrOnic nailed it with the photos.

Was trying to track this guy down, and found that there is no Ebay site for Israel. And this:

Omri Lavi, one of the founders of the Israeli eBay users' community, said "Israelis ... can't sell something
for 75 cents that they paid a dollar for years ago. Instead, they start at $2 and go down to $1.50."

    Reported as well.

Not the first fake key Barber quarter I have seen come out of Israel, about.. oh maybe a year ago I saw one that someone bought, raw, off of eBay from a seller in Israel a one of the Westchester county NY shows. IIRC it too was a VF-XF and was bad. Thankfully the guy paid by PayPal with his credit card.... hope he was made whole.

OTOH, he paid $7k IIRC for an 01-S so I suppose he had to assume some risk.

    Still for sale.image
  • I have already reported this seller's items 3 times and the auctions are still up,the bid is up to $1800 on the big 3 Barbers, poor buyers are not going to know what hit them if try to resell to a dealer-this is a shame that ebay is ignoreing all of our reports-then again it is just a profit to them ,the higher they sell for the more Ebay makes-image

  • Thanks for the comparisons, those were very helpful. I would be very leery buying anything from outside the US, let alone a key date expensive coin.

You know, I was thinking along the lines of putting in a $20,000 bid and then upon winning, instantly filing a fraud claim with ebay.

It hasn't so far, Bill. I only do that in cases where the coins are counterfeit and/or the listing is a scam. I am hoping and expecting that the listings will be nuked by EBay before their scheduled completions. But just in case....

  • I wonder why anybody would bid on theese, besides that with a little work on the internet you could figure out they are bogus. If you know enough that they are expensive key dates, you should know enough not to buy them from an unknown seller half a world away.
    not an expert,just well informed.

something goofy has happened with these listings. they are now tripping up chromes fishing filter.

now, the domain is a legit ebay domain, so i am not worried about it, but this was not happening earlier in the day.
