PCGS Just wacked one of my Indian Cents from my registry set today, they no longer consider it a va

I got an email today letting me know that my 1869/69 S-4 has been removed from my registry set as PCGS no longer consideres it a variery,
WOW,, What a bummer

Just got an email from PCGS as follows,:

After I questioned why PCGS wanted the 1869/69 S-4 removed when, even though it is not CPG, it is a legitimate variety that PCGS grades, the grading room reversed the decision. I have given the coin its own slot back in the complete sets. I apologize for this inconvenience. This has resulted in some better checks and balances and in the future, no coin will be removed unless it has been reviewed by more than one expert and there is agreement that the coin should be delisted.

PCGS removed a dime from the Mercury Dime set about a month ago as well. Sorry to hear the news.

They pulled my 1941-S DDR that it took two years for me to find.

Does removing a coin like that ( from the registry) kill the value?

  • So does this mean they no longer attribute these? I'd like to hear Rick Snow's opinion on this.

Absolutely. Takes away the demand for the coin. It's their game and their rules. Do you want to play or not? I choose to play.imageThey removed the 1941 DDO Lincoln from the major variety set and replaced it with the 1958 DDO Lincoln of which there are 3 known to exist. Wanna guess who owns them? That's right. The guys at the top of the registry. It's like everything else in life, money talks and bull$hit walks. Hey, I'm just glad they allow me to participate and show my humble collection. To be fair a collection with a 58 DDO is more often than not cooler than a set without one or just a 41DDO.

I would agree that the 58 DDO is a great coin. The problem is that only three individuals will ever make a complete variety set. Many collectors strive for a completed collection
    do they not? Shag

Putting a coin in the registry set with a population of 3 total seems to be too limiting to me.
Of course if I owned one of the 3 I'd be all for it image

There's always the risk that things may not work out as you like if you let other people determine what you collect. Not that there's anything wrong with it if it's really what you want to do, of course.

So do what I did, find a registry set category with no other significant entrants, take over the #1 spot, and then brag to all your friends.... who then look at you like "registry? Isn't that what you sign up for when you get married?"

  • The 1869/69 S-4? Sheesh! That's a big variety IMO. In other news, I just checked the Fly-In Club website and it comes up as Account Suspended... my Indian Cent variety world is in chaos right now image

Whenever the rules change, the value to any coin will plumppet. Fact is, the number of participants does not increase that much. So basically, the same group of folks that had a great influence into the price guide unless they all got some really big raises, they will be working within those same budgets that established the price guide to begin with. For example, will collectors find a new source of funds that will eventually show the added value that a + designation is suppose to give a coin over one without?

A pop 3 coin does not belong in a registry. That's just not right.

First let me say......that is NOT right! Once a coin is in a set it should not be taken out.....period! It's not fair to those that hunted and found one and spent the money to get it in the holder so that it would go into the set. It's just not right.

Second, there are several dime varieties that there are zero of at this time. This does not mean they should be taken out....in my opinion. I enjoy the hunt.

But I DO NOT like the prospect that if I do find a rare variety.....someday it could just be taken off.....just like that!!!

Minor varieties should never have been included in the registry in the first place.

They may be fun to collect, but they really aren't very important.

I have several EDS examples of Jefferson nickels that are not recognized as being some of the most difficult coins to collect but do you ever see me boo-hooing over it? image

Ah yes, the deep and dark secret society of what variety stays and what variety goes continues at PCGS. No pre notice, no debate, no opinions solicited FROM THE COLLECTORS. Just the hush, the sound of silence, the assumption presented that only great wisdom of superior experts in the field of numismatics can make a decision not even in consultation, agreement, discussion or support of any specialized collecting clubs or organizations ahead of time.

    But Wait…

What if you want to ADD a variety...Incredibly simple is it not? Just email the Registry folks, and Wa La! Your variety is added. Sure it’s their game. It’s just too bad they do not understand it could all be improved.
