A Flying Eagle 1c for my 1858 year set.

For the last ~ 3 years I've been looking for a MS64-5 FE for a (no gold) 1858 year set (I was born in 1958, hence the interest in 1858). 1858 Flying Eagles are a RELATIVELY common coin (for the Type), so I was able to be picky. I looked at a LOT of MS64-5 coins. I finally just purchased one in NGC MS64. It is prooflike and IMO very PQ for the grade. In hand there is a hint of cameo contrast.

I must say though I'm not much of a fan of that white cud around the rims....

Very nice coin for the grade. Very few marks. From the pics it looks like there might have been some spot removal (carbon probably) in the fields below the "S" of "STATES" and "O" of "OF", and under the "A" of "AMERICA". I've seen a lot of that on MS Flyers, especially in NGC plastic even at the MS-65 level. Of course, it may look different in hand. Still, the coin has lots of eye appeal, something too many 64s lack.

That's the PL die, as indicated by the die crack through the tail feathers and the second A in AMERICA. Great variety to look out for, esp at the price of type.

edited to add: I also know that exact coin! Small world image
