Photo Contest Anyone? Progress Update

robecrobec Posts: 6,806 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's been almost one year since the last contest.

I do have a TrueView of this PR64 BN Lincoln, but after knocking my head against the wall trying to come close to Phil, I thought others might like to try their hand with it. You or I won't have the advantage of imaging the coin raw like Phil did.

$100 goes to the winner. The winner will be chosen based on a pole posted on this forum. When all the images are received, I will assign a number to each entry that connects the image to the owner.

Image size should be no larger than 640x640

Postage from one member to the next Priority plus $500 insurance. I will reimburse the mailing cost to each member. I won't reimburse any headache medicine costs incurred, however.

If interested please send a PM.

The coin's reverse at first looks like a small pool of grape juice, but under the lights it brightens up to an almost hot pink on the lower two thirds to a candy apple green towards the top. It doesn't seem to translate that way in my images though. If you are up to the challenge, here's your chance.

Here is the TrueView and then a few of my feeble attempts.

That's fine with me, but Brandon can spring for the winner of that one.image

I'll give it a run. I think you may have picked the most difficult thing to image though -- proof copper with color.

That is a definite advantage. Sure wish I had one.

That's really too bad. I know you'd love time with this one.

I'm leaving the entry period open until 8:00 PM (Pacific) tomorrow nite. So far we're at nine combatants. I'd like to see about 15 or so. I know there are a lot of great photographers out there that haven't responded.

Ok Bob, pencil me in then, if you would. I will have to, literally, dust off the imaging station as I haven't done much for awhile, but it should be fun.

We have 19 great photographers signed up so far. There are a couple of highly regarded photographers still missing from the list although I can't blame them. This is a pretty tough coin to image. There is still about 10 hours to sign up if you're up to the challenge.image

Thank you to all who decided to enter the contest and to all the replies. Here is the list of entrants. It is made up of members here and ATS. The final tally of the combined scores of both forums will decide the winner. There are some real heavy weights and should be a fun and interesting contest.

If I've left anyone off the list, please contact me and I will fix it.

After all the addresses are received, I'll map out the route and get the coin sent out, hopefully early tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone and have fun with it.

Here is the finalized list and the order in which the coin will travel. The order is set geographical and will start in California, where I am. It should save a little time since it won't be crisscrossing the country. It will be making a stop to 15 states and 26 contestants and will end up in Connecticut before returning to California.

    Yeah they're pretty tough.

I've heard lots of comments that the TrueView photos are quite light. And indeed they are when I see them posted in the forum - but they're darker (or more robust maybe?) in PhotoShop for instance. I was racking my brain as to why this was occurring and discovered, somewhere along the line, an issue with color profiles. I think I've fixed this and so it shouldn't be much of an issue from now on (hopefully). You can assign all past images with the color profile sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and the image will subsequently be less washed out.

    Have fun with the contest!

    Phil
  • robecrobec Posts: 6,806 ✭✭✭✭✭
The coin in reality is actually much darker in hand. It only brightens up when bombarded with lights. I do like the profile that Phil provided.

If there is one coin that will give you heartburn trying to photograph is a brilliant Lincoln proof. Good luck to all of you and I hope you send a bottle of Advil along with the coin to the next photographer. I can't wait to see the fruits of your labor.

It will be interesting, this is a beast of a coin and I for one could not capture it's beauty no matter what I tried. I was tempted to crack it out and try but I guess that's a no no. image
