Look what I picked up at the B&M Auction in L.A. mmmmmmmmmm!
I was so pleased to have won this 1914-D Lincoln in the Bowers & Merena auction, and this little baby is going right into my personal collection!
But check out B&M's photo of this coin, compared to Todd's (www.bluccphoto.com) photo!
This is Todd's photo

This is Bowers & Merena's photo

Any way, pretty sweet coin, don't you think!!

Todd's photo would have probably increased the online bidding competition so be happy they used what they did
<< <i>Very nice looking 14-D with a solid strike. Nice pick up

I have no doubt that I would have paid more for this coin had the photos been better (thank goodness Todd is not their photographer!!!). But I viewed this coin at B&M's office ahead of time and even if I wasn't bidding on other coins, I went to specifically bid on THIS coin!!

Now my entire evening will be ruined due to the angst I will suffer knowing that this coin does not belong to me
How does the color of the coin, in hand under good lighting, compare with the 1912P you showed me at last month's Fremont show?
It looks lovely in the picture and probably looks even better in hand.
<< <i>You just had to go ahead and post a picture of that toned MS 64 1914D cent, didn't you.

No comparison really, that 1912 had more blue/purple in it - this 1914-D is very satiny and has hints of deep burgundy with a slight purply/gun metal grey tint, totally original looking with an amazing mark free strike, and yes, it's even more gorgeous in hand. I am tickled purple to have this coin!

Kevin, if you don't want tomorrow evening also to be ruined, you may want to stay off the forum!

You'd think B&M might think about hiring a photographer????

<< <i>Definitely pays to go to the lot viewing or have someone you trust view the coins on your behalf... wow!!!

I'm sure Todd can use the work!!! Actually, before this auction, because I DID consign a group of coins to them, I spoke with my B&M rep and forwarded a couple of Todd's photos taken of the same coins they sold at a prior auction, and my rep said he forwarded my email to the higher-ups, but it was too late for this auction to make any changes. Although their photos certainly helped me as a bidder, you are right in that they are a detriment to the consignor's coins. However, let me add that, in my opinion, Heritage's photos are TOO good - in my experience, Heritage's photos are better than the actual coin in that somehow the coins' flaws seem to be very faint or disappear altogether, which of course can be even more problematic. So absolutely, the lessen here is, if at all possible, always view the coins before bidding (or have a trusted person do so on your behalf).

Bowers: I have no idea how they did that shot to make it look that color.
My shot: I think it is a pretty good shot. The colors I pulled out are in the coin at most angles. The coin is a little darker in hand, but not by much. The hazyness at the bottom of the reverse is on the slab. There is a little more blue under AMERICA than the pic shows.
It is a very nice coin, I don't get the 64. However it only lasted as Charmy's new baby for a little while and she hinted to what the replacement was........
<< <i>even though many Lincoln cents leave me cold, I love that example! congrats!! >>
me too, don't look at many but that is a peach!!
Congrats on great score.

The strike is full, the color is gorgeous, but I do have one reservation...
I feel it should be in a 65 holder

I agree, I think it has a shot for MS65 so I'm going to submit it to PCGS for an upgrade when I go to the PCGS Las Vegas show in a couple weeks.

However, I'm not sure I like the stark white toning areas on the rims at 10 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock.
<< <i>Is that a slight die rotation I see or are those white NGC tabs playing tricks on my eyes? >>
You hae a very good eye, yes the coin is rotated slightly, gives it even more character! I've not added it to my signature line, along with the 1877. I'm so tickled that I was able to find these two sweet coins!
