The image is fairly small to comment on the coin. What is it about the holder that you are concerned with?

  • I increased the image size. The coin does not look good to me, so I am also questioning the holder. Hope that the larger image helps.

  • I just checked, "PCGS 12" slabs, (1995 era) did not have barcodes.

But, I appreciate him pointing out what he felt to be a fake. I dont want to sell fakes and would want to know if I was, that way I wouldnt sell it to someone else and so I could go after the person who sold it to me.

This cert number was sold previously by Heritage as lot 13324 on 12/11/07 and the coin in the Heritage archives does not appear to match this coin. Therefore, this piece might be a counterfeit coin in a counterfeit holder.

  • That is one thing I was looking at too, the letters in the motto. But, they are exactly like that on all other trade dollars too.
  • Tom, found this on Heritage:

Same Cert #. This is 2 years before I bought it. Is there anyway on earth that these are the same coins? I am starting to feel like the "boob" now!

In my opinion these are not the same coin since the Heritage piece has flat stars throughout whereas yours has full star radials. Also, the foot detail on your is present and slightly odd looking whereas the Heritage coin is missing this detail. Additionally, I do not see the field digs on the Heritage piece, but this could be attributed to lighting. At least one of these is a counterfeit, in my opinion, and I would guess the Heritage piece is real.

I agree that they appear to be different coins. Defect areas just don't match at all.

Since the PCGS holdered Heritage coin appears to be legit, your coin would appear to be illegit.
  • I am pretty much convinced. I need to send this to PCGS. If it was in a fake slab, its probably a fake coin. but, why make such a perfect fake in weight if you are putting it in a fake slab? Why use an old style slab? I am really confused. I am sending it tommorow and will get an answer if it comes pack slabbed XF again, then I will not know what to think about the Heritage coin vs this one.

The thing is. . .yes, the cert numbers are the same. But the entire certification tag is identical. By that i mean, the font is right on. Also check out the faded spot above the second "s" in "Series:". Check out the faded grey spot above the first digit in the seven digit cert number. Even the squiggly faded grey lines at the very far right side of the cert tag are present on the OP coin and the Heritage coin. All PCGS generation holders of the type do not bear these same faded grey dates on the cert tag as the example in the Conder PCGS generation topic does not bear these faded grey spots. Here is the example from the Conder topic:

All this being said, these are two undeniably different coins. i do not know what has happened in this situation, if both are real or if one is bogus. i did think the faded grey spots being the exact same on both inserts was worth pointing out.
