Damn! I knew I should have made reservations to go!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Normally I don't like dwelling on the happenings of the past, but this "promotion" is a nice throwback to the good 'ol days of on-site grading. Only now if PCGS can do something about that stupid "handling fee"...

I agree, I rarely have more than a couple coins for submission and that fee really adds a lot. image

There is one major dealer who is also a high volume submitter and he estimates that if he sends the exact same number of coins for grading this year as he did last year, the "handling fee" increase of $3 over last year added with the minimum $6 shipping charge (that didn't exist last year) would cost him an extra $23000 in expenses. Talk about a few extra dollars out of the pocket.

This 'new' program is actually a throwback to 2003, when it was offered as well.

This applies to any type of submission - raw, regrade, or crossover .

PLUS - you can mix submission types under this service. Each submission type has to be on a seperate form, but as long as you are submittiog 5 of more coins IN TOTAL you qualify for the $65 service (and only one handling fee). Submissions have to be done all at once, so don't come back an hour later with 3 coins and try to add them. We won't do that.

This used to be a very popular service - don't ask me why we ever cancelled it. It's back!!!image

Sadly, my widgets wouldn't qualify to be wrapped in $65 plastic.

Maybe I just don't get it, but how many folks out there have five coins or more that are worth $1500 or less that are really worth paying $65+ each to be graded in one day???? Unless someone is buying these coins really cheap, that sort of fee on that relatively low value of a coin would seem to really cut into a significant portion of the profit margin.

I agree with you. Personally I would like to see it expanded to at least 5K or less.

Many dealers who submit coins on a consistent basis (myself included) will often times submit coins on the Express service tier coins that are worth considerably less than $1500. Although $65 is significantly more expensive than the cost of the Express service, the turnaround time is much shorter (24 hours vs. 1 week) and there is not a need to spend additional money and time on round trip shipping. There are certain coins of certain denominations in particular that are perfect for this service. The $65 cost for this service really is a great deal especially for coins that were intended to be submitted under the Express tier.

If my memory serves me right PCGS used to offer this service until they discontinued it sometime in 2004.

NGC has always provided almost the exact same on-site service for the same fee. For them that service has always been very popular and very profitable.

Sounds like submissions must be slowing down and they're trying to drum up some more business.

Keep in mind the recent PCGS sponsored Las Vegas coin show where dealers each submitted 100+ coins at the $100 walk through rate. After that the number of walk through coins cued up for submission for this Long Beach would likely be down considerably.

I can't imagine paying $65 to slab a coin worth less than $1,500. About the only time that makes sense, IMO, is that if you have a pending deal on the spot for a coin near the upper end of that limit, but the potential buyer demands it in a PCGS slab.

This special is available to PCGS Authorized Dealers and Collectors Club Members only. Customer Service representatives will be available at the booth (#807) to answer questions about products and services, and to accept submissions for all levels of service.

The extensive PCGS Grading Set will be displayed nearby (at tables #1228 and 1229).

Meet the Expert sessions with Hall will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 28 and 29, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the PCGS booth.

Visitors to the three-day show will also see both the “Gold River Morgan Dollars Set,” ranked number two on the PCGS Set Registry for date set circulation strikes, the “Wild West Collection,” a complete set of superb-grade Carson City dollars.

With a PCGS set rating of 66.607, highlights of the display include the finest known 1878-S and condition census 1886, 1897-S and 1899-O dollars, all graded PCGS MS-68.

Another featured exhibit, presented by Monaco Rare Coins of Newport Beach, California at booth #934, will showcase the “Wild West Collection” with some of the finest known Carson City dollars. The display will include an 1889-CC graded PCGS MS-68 and a rare branch mint proof 1893-CC NGC PF-67 Cameo, both formerly in the collections of Louis E. Eliasberg Sr. and Jack Lee.

Terrific concept... I think $5K makes more sense for what is at stake here...

    1. More submissions

    2. economics- consider postage, insurance and time as well as the real value of the coin and 1500 just seems lite for what is trying to be accomplished here.

    3. I believe it just may help attendance at LB

    4. Including World coins is a great idea

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I will watch this closely and make whatever adjustments we need. It started off well in LB and helped a lot of submitters take advantage of show grading who otherwise would not of.

$65 makes sense. Glad to see that the price has become permanent.

I was considering having some coins graded on site at the Las Vegas show but the $100 per coin price turned me off.

Now i'm just wondering if I will have to wait in line to get them graded on site...

Glad to hear you're sticking with it. $65 still seems like too much for me to have a $1500 or less coin graded. If that limit were maybe $3000 or so per coin, it would be much much more tempting. image
