poofed Alaska thread? Sheesh - post a COIN (or token) from Alaska
I swear I just saw a post an Alaska thread not 20 minutes ago. Checked again and it's gone. Maybe poofed because of OT posts? I thought it was a cool idea. Let's try again. Maybe this time we should stick to coins (or in my case a token)...

She looks like she would be a better looker on our paper money than those pickled Presidents. At least she has the "Hot" thing down well.

I love that token. It encompasses two of my favorites, nuggets and merchant tokens.
zeebob, that was my "Post something Alaskan" thread that went awry and poofed a couple of days ago. It had a half-life of 20 minutes or something. I've seen worse threads that lasted for days like the recent "wife" thread which I think is now dead.
I'd like to see some more Alaskan tokens.

Wow, very cool! Where were you when you prepared that die? I believe they were minted by the Alaska Mint. Do you know anything else about the piece?
It's one of my favorite modern pieces since (a) it's tied to a real event using an official event logo and (b) I believe it has a low mintage as a result of low demand (vs. low mintage limit). The obverse logo is the official Nome Centennial logo, a celebration that included many events held over several months. The logo was used on all kinds of centennial items including their website, pins, and t-shirts. I couldn't resist getting the t-shirt when I ran across it. Only 25 of these were minted according to Nome Coins and they were on sale for 2 years. Demand was low and the price had to be lowered near the end of the centennial. The combination of celebrating a gold rush, modern celebratory events (like SCDs vs. just issuing a commem), and low mintage in spite of long sales period make it interesting to me. Of course, being an ounce of gold doesn't hurt either
<< <i>I always thought [Alaska] was stolen from someone else. - Mainly t he Indians whom we all owe the land under our houses to. >>
Going down that line of reasoning, would you say virtually all of the US and Canada was stolen (aside from the reservations and autonomous regions)?
BTW, did you know George Washington joined the revolutionaries when the governor of VA stripped him of 40,000 acres of Indian land he had grants for? The US might not have been without for the desire for Indian lands....
In addition to the desire for Indian land (and sometimes gold), one reason Americans continually broke treaties with some of the Indians was that it was hard to condone their practice of taking women and children as members of their tribe. While it was acceptable practice for Indians to take women and children from other tribes, they didn't adjust with the times when they ran into a culture that couldn't abide by it.

Yes. $1,955 for the au/ms set and $805 for the xf.
I think the Bingles are a cool piece of history as well.
