Results of my first ever submission (NGC)!!! Some good, some bad... (big pics included)

Well, bought a few coins raw recently. I know, probably shouldn't do that unless I know what I'm doing. Decided to submit them to NGC to see how I did and to get them into some protective plastic. The first four coins listed were purchased raw, the fifth was cracked out and resubmitted.

LineItem Year Mint Mark Variety/Pedigree Denom. Proof Grade Strike Char Comments
001 1833 C-1 1/2C MS 61 BN
002 1891 25C PF IMPROPERLY CLEANED
003 1891 S 25C MS IMPROPERLY CLEANED
004 1908 S 1C MS ARTIFICIAL COLOR
005 1883 CENTS 5C MS 66

The 1833 1/2 Cent has a slight scratch on the face so I was 50-50 on whether it would even grade. I figured it might get an AU58 if it did grade. The picture below was taken at an angle to maximize the view of the scratch on Liberty's face. Ended up getting MS61BN. Some red peeking through, but knew it wasn't enough for the RB designation. I'm pretty pleased with the assigned grade.

The 1891 proof was purchased knowing that it was at least lightly cleaned. I just really like the toning and I didn't pay too strong of $$ for it. Wouldn't have thought of sending it in but I've posted it here before and some said coins in simliar condition sometimes make their way into a PF61 or PF62 holder. NGC didn't agree. Not upset about the assessment and was 85% sure they would not slab it. I still like the coin and I might send it into NCS sometime just to get it in some plastic (and retain a little hope they may flip it to NGC for slabbing image).

This 1891-S 25c was also bought raw and I figured it was a good looking and colorfully toned AU58, maybe an MS coin. I figured worst case they would think it was artifically toned or something like that. Didn't expect to get the verdict that it was improperly cleaned at all!! Not happy with this one and will definitely take a very close look at it when it gets home to see if I can figure out what they mean.

This 1908-S Indian Cent was also purchased raw. Just loved the look of the coin and thought it was very solid for the price paid. I was 90% sure it would slab at 63-64RD, only thought they may not slab it because off the nick on the second feather, but i've seen worse than that make it in. Didn't expect artificial color at all!!!! Maybe I don't know what to look for, maybe NGC got it wrong?? I know sometimes these coins have a little lighter color than some of the other MSxxRD coins, but still not convinced it's artificial color. Will have to take a closer look at this one when it comes home and maybe get some opinions from others at the next show I attend. Not happy with this one at all!!!!

The last coin, the 1883 5c was sent with the coins I had purchased raw in order to round out my 5 free submissions. I bought this one on the BST a few months ago, cracked it out of an OGH PCGS MS65 slab, stored it in my 7070 for a few months and sent it back in. I guess it matured a little bit in my album image I just wanted to get it back into some plastic holder as I have been sort of regretting cracking a coin of this value in the first place. Never expected a 66, just wanted to get it back in a shell to avoid ruining it. Guess I got really lucky on this one and it sort of makes me forget the others in my order, well just sort of image (seller's original pics below)

So... I guess I paid for a little numismatic education here. Definitely learned not to buy raw coins (despite all previous warnings) just because I like the way they look!! Will only consider buying raw from this point on if I know that I really really really like the coin as is and outside of a slab w/o any expectation that a third party grader would agree; at least until I learn to grade better...

Figured I'd share my first experience here with you all. I've gotten lots of help here and figured maybe my experience may help some other newbies. Any comments would be appreiciated, even those reminding me not to buy raw coins!! image

Do not waste your $ on sending the 1891 PF to NCS, its been badly scrubed and will never slab as problem free. My first thought on the 08 is that it looks a touch pink, but that could be so many things with pics, monitors, etc.

Editted to add: The 08 could be fine and slab np next time, as its a semi-key date both services tend to error on the safe side if there is any ? at all.

I think a lot of us have went through what you just experienced. A few years ago one of my raw purchases did have a happy ending however. Your Proof quarter reminds me a lot of it. Even though it appears my (former) Proof half has the same cleaning hairlines as your quarter, NGC slabbed it in a 61 holder. You never know when you're going to catch them on a good day.

gosh i would of mineral oiled that 1/2 cent some to protect the surfaces some as some of the spots on the obverse could be active...i don't even see the scratch should of been a concern...but it's original

the 1891 proof...sad...it does appear as most of the lines maybe above surface in the toning...i wonder what a dip and taco bell napkin might do---good gawd i'll be bashed on this note...lol

the 1891 ms quarter almost has a soldering fluxed look or like it was tinned some

the 08-s indian...i could see a color concern as an old dipping maybe...from what i read here...copper really is a hit or miss...i wouldn't resubmit thou

as to the 1883 nickel...yayy...i love a good crack out result...theres some courage even on no brainers...nice price spike as a reward

as to buying raw...they all start thata way...sometimes we win...sometimes we lose...i think all in all...i'd still pass you in regretable buys as i too am still building on those lil "ruht rohs"

please know...no bash i hope was taken...just passing my inputs

btw...sweet taste in coins you have there

Too bad it got scrubbed, but that proof quarter is sweet, anyway, when held at the proper angle. I really like it, in or out of plastic.

Congrats on the half cent and Libnick. Too bad about the Indian. I personally wouldn't have seen that one coming, either.

I've dealt with NGC and PCGS many times over old copper and color. Yes, they seem quick to condemn with "questionable color". Dipping, as you know, can give a copper coin an artificial color, sometimes pinkish, sometimes a little too pumpkin. With other metals it is easier to get away with and sometimes can even save a coin needing rescuing. But copper dipping is risky.

Pix can be deceiving but I can imagine their trouble with your IHC.

More than once PCGS has refused a crossover from NGC for some pricey Lincolns of mine: questionable color. See an example below. NGC doesn't agree. It makes you a little nuts.

Bodybagging a coin for questionable color feels a little like convicting a man for questionable guilt. I guess the difference is that PCGS and NGC only slab the convincingly innocent.

Thanks again for the comments image Still a little shocked about the 1908-S, but will be patient and wait to get some opinions when I get it back and show it to some others in person as the pictures can't always tell the whole story. I do think the color in my picture is pretty accurate though, maybe even a little more orange than the actual coin but I can't remember since my coin has been away for the past few weeks image I'm just relieved I had the good fortune with the Liberty Nickel, if that one didn't come through I can't imagine how much worse I'd be feeling!

Bob, your Proof half has honest hairlines. The coin you are referring to in the OP has been cleaned. The difference between contact hairlines and cleaning hairlines is the contact hairlines will be of varying length and will be at different angles. You'll see the on 1891 the hairlines are basically the same length, boldness(even into the stars), and are generally parallel which would point more toward cleaning hairlines.
