Which will be worth more: 2008 SAE w/ 07 rev., or a 1/2 oz Gold Spouse (MW)

TwoSides2aCoinTwoSides2aCoin Posts: 44,623 ✭✭✭✭✭
I enjoyed a nice telephone chat with a fellow board member and we kicked this thought around.
We were set to trade, but then, ... we both changed our mind.
So which will be worth more in the future ? One ounce of bullion with an error, or one half ounce of spouse gold. (Martha Washington proof, to be specific).
I'm banking on the gold and he is banking on the error.

What do you guys think ? ( this includes women and YNs)
Take the poll. I expect 4000 votes.

Comments

  • Error, only because many of them went out undetected and there is a bigger collector base for ASE established.

Mitigating factor - the number of Martha's that went to melt when gold hit $1,000

We will be dead before it is decided.

  • If you're talking the next 5 years, the MW will be worth more because it will track the spot price of gold.

There's an essential difference between a VARIETY and an ERROR, and the 08/07 Silver Eagle is a VARIETY. To quote PCGS Lingo:

    error
A numismatic item that unintentionally varies from the norm. Ordinarily, overdates are not errors since they were done intentionally while other die-cutting “mistakes” are considered errors. Double dies, planchet clips, off-metal strikings, etc. also are errors.

    variety
A coin of the same date and basic design as another but with slight differences. PCGS recognizes all major varieties while there are thousands of minor varieties, most of which have significance only to specialists of the particular series. After hubbed dies, introduced in the 1840s, varieties are mainly variations in date and mintmark size and placement.

Though created by an Mint worker's "error," the 08/07 Eagle is as much a VARIETY as the Type Two Buffalo Nickel, will be more widely collected by those who collect this popular series, and won't be made again next year.

As for the MW proof, it's the first one, but it's only one in a series that few can collect. If the spot price of gold doubles, its value will double. But that might be a long way off, considering the fact that the world's Central Banks are sitting on 30,000 metric tons of gold, and some, like the IMF, want to sell.

That's why I voted for the ASE.

Depends on how many Martha's were melted a few months back. There is a BIG SAE collector base compared to the spouse series, BUT watch Martha's base grow rapidly once for example if people find out there's only 5, 6 or 7 thousand Martha Washington's left! IMO

I would say the bullion, because gold will be $200.00 a oz by next year when our ecomony bounces back.

I basically just made a similar bet, sold my NGC ER 69 Reverse 07 for $520 on ebay, and bought a TJ first spouse for just about spot with the discounts etc. I had the additional thinking of the potential for spotting on the ASE going through my mind at the time too though.

the sales figures for the newest First Spouse are insanely low.. not even 2000 for the Unc. so far.. either people are losing interest fast in that series, or because the Mint jacked up the price to a ridiculous level (about $200.00 more per coin than when Martha was released).. when Gold shot up, and has never dropped it back down again, (have you EVER seen the Mint drop the price of ANYTHING once they've raised it?).. hardly anyone is buying the Spouses that are still available.. if the sales figures hold for the latest one, its value later on will be based more on its insanely low Mintage than its Gold content, in my opinion.. here are last week's figures from Dave Harper's NN column..

are these Commemoratives or bullion?.. the two lowest Modern Gold Commemoratives are the 1997 Jackie Robinson Gold Unc. at around what, 5500?, and the 2000-W LOC Bi-Metallic Unc. at 6683 (i remember the number of the latter because i used to own four of them.. never owned a Jackie..) .. look at the prices of those now.. over three grand to six grand, depending on raw or graded.. whaddya think the Louisa Adams Unc. is gonna do in the future if its final Mintage is thousands below either of those?..

    image

as far as to whether the 08/07 ASE is an error or a variety.. i think that's open to discussion, but i lean towards error.. there's no error in the Reverse design.. it's a perfectly normal 2007 Reverse, except it's on the back of a 2008 coin which had MANY changes to its Reverse (and even changes to its Obverse.. the date is much smaller than earlier years, for example)..

considering the 08/07 was just discovered a couple months ago, i think it's way to early to seal its fate in the history books as one or the other.. a lot depends on if future ASE albums have a hole for it.. if it ends up in the Red book, and what they call it, what the Graysheet calls it.. blah blah etc. etc..

Edited to add.. i find the results of this poll, so far, verrrrrrrrrrrrrry interesting.. with more people (so far) leaning towards the 08/07.. Yogi and i talked about trading one of my 08/07s for his Martha Proof.. then decided to hold off.. i've sold things too soon too many times and kicked myself black and blue later.. (like the 1999 Silver Proof set i sold for $60.00 right after i received my order of TWO and they quickly sold out.. remember those were $29.99 and the limit was two per.. later raised to five per.. why didn't i buy five more when they raised the limit?.. image look at what happened to those not all that much later.. still have the other one..) .. or my LOC Uncs.. got top DollEr for them when i sold them.. i needed the money at the time.. i could get DOUBLE for them now.. image it's just another one of those "who knew?" situations.. gimme a crystal ball, and a colorful gypsy wagon, i'll peer into the future and tell ya what to hold and what to unload or trade.. "sorry we're fresh out".. sigh..

    I voted Error.

It's hard to go against an error coin.

You could ask the same with the 3-legged buffalo, the Extra leaf Quarter, etc.

I have both, so I hope it's a good long race to the top. image

Which in my opinion, and PCGS' wording on the topic, is why the 08/07 is a variety not an error. As I've said several times already, it was an error that led to this variety. I really do not see how there can be so much debate about the terminology.

As far as which will be worth more... That's a good question. Too bad one is gold and one is silver. I'm going to say the MW will be worth more because in years to come I believe the 08/07 SAE will be trading for under $500 but I think it will be a close comparison.

As PMs continue to go up, the premiums for the error will drop, more Marthas will get melted, and the gold in the Marthas will continue to increase in price.

    Just my guess - gold.

checkin' the charts.. Gold shot up about $25/oz today.. Silver isn't doing anything special.. kinda stagnant.. crude oil hit $140/barrell.. hello five buck a gallon gasolline by the Fourth of July Holiday.. (Premium unleaded is already dancing around that price in So. Calif.) .. Gold has been trading in a pretty crazy range the past few weeks.. up, down, up, down.. but still almost $270.00/oz higher than a year ago.. but WAY off its peak of $1050.00/oz back in March.. when poor old Martha was getting melted..

just to put things in perspective.. for whatever it's worth.. here's a picture i shot of a pump's display back in March, 2001 on a road trip, after i tanked up a friend's car.. this was the price of Premium Unleaded.. Regular Unleaded at the same station was $1.43/gallon.. i didn't shoot the picture because of the price.. i shot it because i hit "quads" (ala Video poker).. only seven years ago..
