New purchase: 1849 Moffat & Co. $ | Update: Coin graded by ANACS problem-free F-15

Dennis88Dennis88 Posts: 5,797 ✭✭✭
I bought this coin, my first real rarity and my first coin over $1000 yesterday in Carson City. Although I won't be able to afford other Territorial Gold, I liked the look and (more or less) great originality of this piece. Although there is a small X scratch on the obverse, the reverse only has the noticable planchet flaw (I thought it was a scratch at first, but upon further examination it looks like a planchet flaw). Although the coin is circulated and has seen it times, I think this adds to the great historic aspect of this coin.

Still being in just my first week of the Californian trip (see the other thread around here) I will be heading to the historic places of the gold rush later on this month. At least, now I own something that was there, at that time and actually made the gold rush what it is.

The coin currently is raw but will get graded by probably NCS (although I might try DGS on this). I'd like to thank Allen at Northern Nevada coins for a great coin at a very competitive price.

A little bit of an update:

I sent the coin in to ANACS to get graded and got the results back today. The coin graded a problem-free F-15. I am very delighted by the result and the purchase proves to be a very good one!

i have no problem what so ever of buying a "problem" territorial gold coin.
i like that coin a lot and think it is great!

i wish i owned one but every time i see one for sale the price is simply shocking.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

So what do you people think of the grade?

That's a nice VF coin. I like it. Do you plan to visit with Dr. Kagin while you are in CA? He is the go-to guy for all things Territorial.

i will say a 20 and not really a net 20 either. i consider that
very minor scratch to be just that, a minor issue. it could very
well grade at ngc/pcgs if it is not terribly noticeable in hand.

Cool coin, but it's VG, at best.

I'm not gonna venture a guess on the grade because I have no clue how well the strike on this specific issue comes, but I like it! Congrats

after reading your comment and looking at some of my coins
i think my first guess was very optimistic. i agree with you.

it just has such nice rims for a vg8-10... and i would have to know
if these coins were struck poorly over all. but i do seem to recall
that the words moffat & co were always quite clear on higher
    end examples.

These coins were weakly struck to begin with, but your coin shows considerable, good, honest wear. I'd give it a strong fine/ weak very fine, but am certainly no more than an interested hobbyist.

I love the historical nature of territorial and fractional gold - you have a great addition to your collection there!

It was graded by the dealer as VG10, by a friend of mine F12 and I personally grade it F15 details. The obverse strike is weak, as was usual for the variety but the reverse is kinda nice. Too bad of the planchet flaw and obverse scratch, but for such a coin I don't mind.

    Love it!

Pretty sweet. Of course I was there when it was purchased and saw it in hand as well. image

I think it is in that VG10 to F12 area. Might grade!!!

It's off to ANACS. I will let you guys know what it will grade (net or not)

  • Just for the record.

The coin is a nice original VF detailed coin. Net the coin to a fine because it has a very prominant planchet flaw on the reverse and then reduce the price a little for the X that someone scrathed into the obverse and that makes this a great affordable territorial coin. We've handled many of the Moffats and enjoy doing so as they are one of the most affordable territoials out there. If the grading services are feeling generous they may even grade the coin (then we would have sold the coin too cheap), but we gave Dennis a little deal because he took the time to come see us here in Carson City and we wanted his trip to the states to be memorable.

Side note, we bought the coin the day before and the guy we bought it from didn't even know that the coin was a territorial! Boy was he surprised when paid him what we did.

Thanks for your comments Allen. The planchet flaw is natural, but the X on the obverse is not. I have sent it to ANACS, I'll let you know what they think of it.
