Counting the 2008 ASE versions - Building a rough census
So what's the proportion in the eight different configurations seen already? Post counts from your experiences. I'll be posting mine as my orders arrive.
The new 2008 ASE's have an 07 reverse and an 08 reverse. And, they've got the usual matte finish, and a shiny, even reverse-proof-like strike on the devices. That makes 8 versions: (following Kaelasdad, M = matte and S = shiny, and the order is obverse first/reverse second)

Or will this go nowhere because forum members think there's nothing special about matte vs. shiny?
Has it been as dramatic a difference as in previous years, when there was shiny in addition to matte?
Personally, I'd prefer a reverse-proof looking ASE to a total-matte finish. Kind of like those pre-2003 (year?) platinum business-strikes.
So, try copying the list above, and posting your first-hand counts to each variety!
Here's a few reference photos. The obverses are copied from Manorcourtman who got this madness rolling, and the reverses from Clackamas. The first is the usual matte finish, and the second is the shiny or reverse-proof-like strike.

Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!
I'm still curious to know: How common is the difference even in prior mintages?
Yes, I see enthusiasm has cooled a little bit since it's been noted that a similiar effect is seen in earlier issues.
But has the effect been as dramatic as this year's?
Anybody have pictures of the shiny vs matte, pre-2008 rounds?

I know many have said it doesnt matter. Its okay to feel that way. If you have a coin in your hand, and it looks different than the other coins--sometimes you want answers and you want to know why. No, really. Imagine that. Most folks commenting that it doesnt matter, probably have not seen one in hand.
Some have said these are worn die versions, and it happens all the time. I buy the idea that worn dies may produce shiny versions of these coins, and may have done this in prior years. I dont have a coin like that in hand, and i cant say that the hit is producing greater or lessor detail. If someone wants to take some pictures of those examples, it might help matters.
The coins i have in hand, are hammered details, and they blow mattes away, even graded MS69 mattes. I have 2 NGC MS70 2008/2008 versions with hammered shiny reverses. Did that help them acheive a 70, while my MS69s with a matte reverse got 69s? I have no idea. I doubt it hurt their chances though.
Anyway, what Texas Russ said:
