Photography setup and examples

Just wanted to get some opinions and perhaps some constructive criticism of my super el-cheapo photography setup. image All homemade, mind you. image

Here's my setup (Note: the camera sits on top of my cardboard structure):

And here are some examples I just took today...

These first two were taken WITH the paper covering the ott-lite as is shown in the photos above:

These two were taken with the paper off:

And these two were taken without the ott-lite...using a standard yellow light lamp (in the background of the first two photos I showed):

So...let me know which pair you like best--any and all comments are welcome. image

  • I say you're a steely eyed missile man (props to Apollo 13 movie).

I've seen a lot of people jump in the fire and buy copy stands and such (not that there's anything wrong with that) and not understand the camera (not that there's anything wrong with that either).

Tis about the camera and the nut behind the wheel so to speak.

I'm on an artistic photography block right now. I can't take a good (landscape) photo to save my life. I went out for a two hour walk the other night with my DSLR and took 5 pictures. All bad. Totally uninspired to even click the shutter button and hope for luck.

It'll pass but the source of the photo comes from the photographer. A cardboard platform that is stable is ingenious. Not cheap.

I'm with you brother. Nice shots.

    Real nice shots.

Wow. Don't blow the budget on that copystand. Cool.

Am I nuts? -- I like the shots with the standard lamp the most.
    When in doubt, don't.

Nice "budget" setup and nice pics.

I like the first and last set the best. Have you tried 2 OTT lights to try to brighten up the bottom (3:00-8:00) of the coin?

Which pics represent the coin's "in-hand" look the best to you?

Before I finally got a tripod, I used to take my point and shoot and put it on a similar stand made out of Kinex. Kinex is a bit more flexible as you can and and remove height with the snap of a new piece.

Set ups 1 & 3 resulted in a bright reflective spot in the upper left corner of the slab. Set up #3 is the worst IMO. Set up #2 resulted in slighly crisper 'cartwheel' effect on capturing the luster. Not bad at all for a home made set up. Set up #1 appears to have captured some subtle toning color that #2 did not get. You might try to position the slab and or light using set up #1 so that you don't get the bright reflective spot in the upper left. If you can get the benefit of the additional color capture without the reflective spot...your in good shape.

Thanks for the comments everyone. image

Wes: Right now I only have one ott-lite but I'm going to get another one. All of the photos are true to the coin...if it came down to it though I'd probably say set 3 is the closest to the coin's true color...although it is just a bit on the yellow side.

The thing that bothers me most is the glare at 9:00 and 2:00 that is present on all of the pictures. Perhaps having another light source will get rid of that...any ideas?

  • Another light source will do it but so will turning off the flash and using a long shutter speed.

Or hold a piece of paper in front of the flash. If you're using flash see if there is a flash compensation setting in the camera. Not familiar with your Sony.

It's a point and shoot DSC-V1. Not that great a camera, but it gets the job done. I'd have to look in the manual to see if I can adjust the shutter speed because I don't even know if I can. BTW, none of the photos were taken with the flash.
