Need your help with Lucite...

AUandAGAUandAG Posts: 24,544 ✭✭✭✭✭
encalsed 1888 Hot Lips. Is there anyway to release this coin from it's plastic grave?
Picked it up in a collection yesterday. Paid $6 so don't have a lot invested.
thanks,

That's a pretty neat item . I think I would leave it as it is.

Other than the obvious, a solvent , I'd try freezing it. Our local supermarket sells dry ice. I'd sandwich it in dry ice then give it a rap or two with a hammer. Mike

    This works (be patient):
Cut away as much as possible with a band saw.
Melt as much as possible of the remainder away using a propane torch.
Put it in acetone three or four times to dissolve the remainder.

I like the item as-is. A band saw and some acetone will work well, but I would NEVER EVER use a torch.

Works like a charm. I have done this several times.

Apparently, NCS has had success removing coins encased in lucite and then having them slab afterwards. Link

A variety of solvents will work, including acetone and dichloromethane (methylene chloride). Don't do this indoors--the fumes will be pretty bad.

I like it as is too. I'd probably pay the same price for it , or perhaps a few dollars more, than if it was freed.

I also vote for leaving it as-is, it has much more character now than it could ever possibly have in modern plastic.
Not that you're soliciting votes though.

Keep it the way it is.

Those lucite holders are quite elusive.

I would leave it as is. you must know that it's hermetically sealed as is, and if the coin wasn't contaminated before it was encased, it will remain stable.

SIX DOLLARS? That's less than 50% of melt!!(and I don't mean the Lucite either). The 1888-O VAM 4 has a fair market value(problem free) in the Fine/Very Fine range of about $75. You've just earned a coveted C.U. "YOU SUCK" award imageimage

I like it as is......and for $6! Definitely a bargain.

AUandAG: The You suck award goes way beyond merely getting a great deal. You found a bargain of a lifetime.

Thank you, all I was thinking is that the coin is not retreivable and ruined and would take too much work to even
get it out of the lucite. I was not even thinking of melt....just the effort!
