1910 Matte Proof Lincoln Diagnostics

1910 Matte proof Lincolns have very few distinguishing diagnostics.

But some characteristics are as follows:

1. Heavy die polish on the obverse around the word WE. This polish is mostly East to West in direction.
2. There may also be some die gouges between/near U and S in the word TRUST and between N and G of IN GOD.
3. On the reverse there is a die scratch extending downward and to the left from the first leg of M in UNUM. A word of caution---Many examples of business strikes exhibit raised lines around the M. This was due to damage on the master die. ONLY matte proofs have the line extending downward from M as pictured below.
4. Matte proofs have very wide and square rims.

Please examine the large photo of this 1910 to get a better feel of the overall "look" of a matte proof. Notice the rims and look for heavy die polish mostly around the rims and for die gouges. The amount of die polish and size of the die gouges can vary from coin to coin depending on the stage of the dies.

Dave, Thanks for the post. Question: Is a diagnostic the verticle die scratch from Lincoln's beard to the shirt collar? Mike

Mike, is this the dieline you are talking about rising from the bowtie towards Lincoln beard? If it is, it is not mentioned in the 1983 Numismatist study of MPL characteristics. I provided this image because toning can cover up fine details.

Brian, No, I am referring to the verticle line appearing midway between the ear lobe and lips, from the beard to the collar. Mike

A great post, and pic examples to determine how to tell the matt proof Lincolns, from that of MS business strikes. I have been fooled alot from the differences between MS, and Matt Proof coins, particulary those Lib Seated proof dimes.

    Thanks for sharing...

Great diagnostic post Dave. That baby has all kinds of polish lines in the fields to the right of Abe's face.image

Excellent series of posts! Just a quick note that more than one die pair might have been used during any year, so the diagnostics will differ. (Matte proof dies could not be polished or resurfaced in any way - once they deteriorated, they had to be replaced. Some were likely used for normal circulation strikes, but by then the diagnostic marks would probably have eroded.)
