good post but i have to admit not caring for the coin. i do not like the obverse because we give too much credit to a person stumbling over an island chain. sorta like columbus and his indians. i know that when i think of hawaii, james cook is the last thing on my mind. the reverse is much nicer and does credit to the state.
good post lee, but it appears not a very popular commem seeing the amount of replies so far ;-)
the toning on the coin pictured looks PQ to me, good choice to display.
Deservedly ranking as the top Commem in difficulty to obtain. I don't see many of them at shows at all . . . and the ones out there get snapped up fairly quickly.
Mine is a 63 . . purchased from one of our Board members . . .
This story is not complete without mention of the Bank of Hawaii and the coffee. I'm sure someone here can expand on that beyond what little I could contribute.
Thanks LeeG for another great thread. The Milwaukee ANA was a bit much for me, so I took some days away from coins. Here is one of my nicest Classic Commemoratives.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
