It is a 1896-S that I pulled from a junk roll of silver

    It was in a roll of Washington Quarters that i picked up at a show in West Chester
    Open it looked at it and about fell out of my chair

    It's a G6. Full rim reverse helps pull it up. G4 can have wear into the lettering on the reverse on coins from the 1890's. That's a choice piece for the grade. Leave that original dirt on the coin as it makes it more desirable. DO NOT CLEAN IT, PLEASE!

    Not too shabby for a junk roll find. I personally would call it a G-4. G6 and VG8 need to have some laurel wreath detail for my tastes. Of course that is my opinion and it seems most put it at the G6 level.

    Despite the quibbling over one or two grading points, yours is a find to be really really proud of.

    Congratulations. image I'd say Good-6 if you can see the L and the Y in Liberty. Not that a G4 and G6 are that far apart $-wise. Those rims are very bold.

    Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

    I seem to recall a recent thread about "how long have you been looking for a lost coin" (or something to that extent).

    At any rate, the person that sold that roll of junk quarters will have the doozie in that thread!

    Where are the people who always suggest that situations like these are a test of one's integrity. Shouldn't you return the coin to the seller informing him/her of their mistake?
