Post your "Box of 20" in words and/or pictures

BaleyBaley Posts: 22,658 ✭✭✭✭✭
Imagine you're going to choose 20 coins you own, you have to sell the rest and I mean every single other coin. Which 20 would you keep?

Here's one of my favorite coins that is always one of the first I pull out when visiting the safety deposit box, would be one of the last to go

a 1799 dollar

also included in my box of 20 is my collection of draped bust halves:

My 15 min. of fame in Numismatics

this reeded edge half dollar, my favorite coin in my dansco type set

and finally, my icon coin: an 1812 half eagle

If you'd like to share with the board, what's in your "box of 20" and why?

I've taken this concept to heart, and over the last few years churned most of what I had,
and I now have about 20 coins (not counting bullion) that make up my collection.

It's not quite a type set, but nice coins I've seen and liked, with a bent towards
half-dimes. 25% are from our old friend Mr. Feld, with a smattering of Sperber and
Poorguy thrown in, with a Pinnacle and Heritage supplying the rest.

The challenge is to not get more than 20 coins, and that's tough; but it also keeps my
overall investment at a relatively fixed level, otherwise my 401(k) might suffer!

Since I was planning on completing the exercise anyway...

    $1.00 1857-D P62 Eliasberg and finest known
    $2.50 1839-O P58
    $2.50 1847-D P55

    $5.00 1861-C P50
    $5.00 1861-D N50
    $5.00 1870-CC P35
    $10.00 1859-O P45
    $20.00 1861-O P45

I found that the first fifteen or so were very easy, and the last five were tough. Some of the coins were kept for sentimental reasons, not necessarily because they were the best twenty or the twenty most valuable.

Love the idea Baleyimage In no particular order:

    MS65 BN
This coin holds a special place in US numismatics, as the lowest mintage, first-year-of-issue coin in a very popular series. Victor David Brenner, the designer, placed his initials on the lower reverse. Although small, their prominence created an uproar, and they were promptly removed, creating the world's most popular variety coin. Its surfaces are lustrous and its strike will please the most discerning collector.

    image

    MS64 RB
A nicely toned example with reds and purple on the obverse. The coin has clean surfaces with minimal marks and no obvious carbon spots.

    image

    MS68*
The Norfolk, Virginia Bicentennial Commemorative was issued to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the land grant for Norfolk, Virginia and the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Norfolk as a borough. The coin bears five dates-1636, 1682, 1736, 1845, and 1936-none of which is the date when the coin was struck, 1937!

    image

    PR64 BN
Super Rainbow colors on a low mintage Matte Proof Lincoln Cent.

    image

    RAW (Was NGC AU50)
Tough to find with the Circ Cameo effect like this one has. Nice coin with minimal distractions.

    image

    RAW (Was AU55 details, lacquered)
Nice strike, great detail, minimal distractions.

    image

    MS63 OGH
Highly lustrous surfaces reveal a beautiful blend of mauve, violet, gold, russet, sky-blue, and gold-brown toning, and sharply executed design elements. Some wispy slide marks are noted on the obverse. A sharp, good looking coin for the grade designation.

    image

    AU55
Graded AU by PCGS but finding wear on this piece is difficult even on most of the high points of the coin; the coin is spectacularly toned in shades of gold, green and orange on the obverse and gold, green, lilac and lavender on the reverse; truly amazing color on both faces coupled with a popular, attractive design.

    image

    MS65 BN
Tough, early "S" Mint example, with very nice color and beard detail.

    image

    MS66 RB
    POP 1/0

    image

    MS65 RD
    In an old Rattler holder.

    image

    MS67 RB
POP 3/0 and my Birth Year. Fantastic Colors.

    image

    XF40
Deeply toned and problem free. Has an interesting obverse die clash.

    image

    AU55
Muted shades of rose are deeply toned over with deep golden tan and russet on the obverse while the reverse displays light shades of grey-blue with pale lime green and red. The coin shows impeccable detail for an AU coin and boasts a great strike.

I have never thought of collecting this way...

I suppose if I could only keep 20 of the coins I have now, they would be as follows:

    1 - 1822 $.01 Raw VG8 - The first coin I ever bought.
2 - 1900 $.01 ANACS MS65B - Gotta have an Indian Head Penny in there!
    3 - 1900 $.05 NGC MS63 - The only 1900 I have ever seen with a fully struck reverse.
    4 - 1913 $.05 Type 1 Buffalo PCGS MS64
    5 - 1923 $.10 NGC MS65FB - Purchased raw as a YN twenty years ago.
6 - 1917 $.25 Type 1 PCGS MS62FH - A great design - sadly one that is more risque by today's standards than it was when intorduced.
    7 - 1936 $.50 Long Island - PCGS MS62
    8 - 1939 $.50 NGC MS67 - Purchased raw as a YN twenty years ago.
    9 - 1883-CC $1.00 Raw / GSA Box MS62- Purchased as a YN twenty years ago.
    10 - 1915 Pan Pac $1G NGC AU58 - Currently my favorite coin, but I don't know why.
11 - 1862 $1G ANACS MS61 - Common date affordable coin, but civil war era & one of the best U.S. coin designs ever!
12 - 1912 $2.50 Raw AU50 - Housed in period antigue 'Merry Xmas' jewelry box.
    13 - 1914-D $2.50 NGC MS61 - 4 Coin gold set assembled in honor of my Grandma's birth year.
14 - 1834 Classic Head $5.00 Raw PO-1 - Compared to all the high grade coins in my collection, this one seems to me like an abstract painting.
    15 - 1914-D $5.00 NGC MS61 - 4 Coin gold set assembled in honor of my Grandma's birth year.
    16 - 1907 $10.00 No Motto Indian - NGC MS61
    17 - 1914-D $10.00 NGC MS63 - 4 Coin gold set assembled in honor of my Grandma's birth year.
18 - 1900 $20.00 PCGS Rattler MS60 - Properly graded, but a fun, original, vaguley proof like coin to behold nonetheless.
    19 - 1914-D $20.00 NGC MS63 - 4 Coin gold set assembled in honor of my Grandma's birth year.
20 - Ancient Iranian Coin - Given to me by my Grandmother - given to her by a man she knew who found it building a road as an Iranian prisoner.

    Cool threadimage

Can't think of twenty right now but ,the first coin would be my 1795 "mint plugged" flowing hair dollar in XF45.

The next 13 would be the rest of my early dollars.

I gotta think about the other seven.

You fellas have some very nice boxes, but simply providing the list without pictures is not impressing me much.image

It will take me some time, and a trip to the bank, before I can post my box of coin pictures. This thread could go the route of the UNO thread, on and on...image

All Morgan dollars...I have to do 4 boxes of 20, and still leaving out great ones. Impossible to settle on 20. This exercise really hits home how hard it will be to part with these and the thousands of others scattered in all those safe deposit boxes. But that day must come.

(edit>> I put asterisks next to the 20 I absolutely couldn't let go of, to keep with the box of 20 spirit.)
