FINALLY Got a Decent Grade of This VAM

Here is the Teletrade lot listing. I cherried it based mainly on the precise date position, though some details were maybes. Just got it in the mail and here are QX3 shots of the date digits.

The best one I could have gotten though was the DMPL that was int he Denver ANA sale. Turned around halfway to Denver and didn't bid it because I didn't view it in hand. Avoided a 6-figure bidding war with Ash consequently, and he probably would have won it anyway.

VAM-2. Doubled Date. Top 100 VAM and a very nice coin! Good work.

How much premium does the coin being a VAM add to the price of the coin?

Is there a price guide for VAM's?

    Thanks.

Probably will give it to NGC for same day attribution at Long Beach with a bunch of other high census VAMs (or mail them to Sarasota if I am too impatient, the more likely scenario). This one looks like a good crossover candidate, should at least make PCGS 40 and 45 looks about right. Might cross it later on if I need a coin or two to fill the quota in a regular level submission of ANACS crossovers. Geberally though, I don't drop the $$$ crossing NGC slabs to PCGS.

About 2X - 3X for this VAM. Last one in this grade that I saw in public auction was a PCGS that went for $1200 or $1300 with the juice. It is a tough date to begin with and there are something like a couple dozen in all grades in NGC and PCGS holders. There are a lot more VAM collectors. The only mint state one I am aware of is, oddly enough, the PCGS DMPL of the date. It was bought by Ash Harrison for the David Miller PL set at the Denver ANA Heritage sale. As the MS DMPL, the variety is peripheral though.

My hats is off to you. XF45 is probably the highest reasonable price you can find this vam in. Greysheet triples at AU50.

    So, that's a heck of a score.

There is a price guide for vams, DennisH was selling one for $20 on eBay. Invaluable if you're in the market.
  • I saw this lot at TT, and based on the date position I thought it might be a VAM 2. I set a limit of $450, and let it go when it went higher. I congratulate you for taking a chance, and being right. Good job!!!!
