1955 Franklin Bugs Bunny question

Will PCGS give a 1955 Franklin the "Bugs Bunny" designation on the slab?

Nope. But the variety is common, bears little or no premium, has its own stages, and is pretty visually obvious anyway. I don't think anyone really needs a TPG to designate a Bugs Bunny. It is actually funny how off track some TPGs already have gotten. They really are needed to authenticate a coin, weed out problem coins, settle grade strata disputes (especially for sliders), and now authenticate die varieties of significant premium values.

PCGS sure will. I recently got back a PCGS-MS66FBL "Bugs Bunny FS-401" designated coin.

As for determining whether the variety brings a "premium", I plan on auctioning off this coin, so we will all see if the variety brings a decent premium.

Then I do stand corrected (and thank you). I forgot there was talk they were going to be doing the Cherrypicker varieties.

    Follow up:

I consigned the PCGS-MS66FBL "Bugs Bunny" to Teletrade on behalf of a customer and the coin sold for $1,500 plus buyers fee in the Teletrade auction. A few days later, I saw the same coin being auctioned off on ebay in a reserve auction by an ebay seller. I promptly notified Teletrade that as far as I was concerned, the act of reauctioning this coin by the Teletrade buyer resulted in a completed sale at Teletrade and I wanted Teletrade to be aware of this. The following week, when the ebay reserve auction failed to hit the reserve (obviously I assume a higher level than the Teletrade hammer price), I was notified by Teletrade that the Bugs was being returned by the buyer and it was being reauctioned by Teletrade. I was also told Teletrade intended to modify its terms and conditions to ensure this situation would not happen again.

  • Thanks for the update. I did not see the ebay auction, but I did notice the coin was returned to TT.

Who was the ebay seller? ...sounds like someone I would want to avoid!

Bushmaster - I just did a search on ebay and the auction does not appear in the completed listings as it was more than 2 weeks old. But, in my email to Ian at Teletrade on the subject, I gave him the ebay # 260067901335.

  • Bugs Bunny varieties will usually bring a premium, not because they are rare (they are very common) but because they are very popular. Hard to say exactly how much of a premium tho.

Yes they will. Under an error designation.

No, under the new variety service. Since it has an FS number, it goes under that service. I think the fee is $15.00 for that, plus whatever tier you submit under.
  • I am very confused. Do I have to send a minimum of 5 coins for the variety service and pay for the variety service for all the coins. This seems very silly.

I understand it is a very easy variety to spot, but we all know that when it comes time to sell, people will pay a premium if the variety is printed on on the slab. That is the only reason I want it on the slab.

Welcome to the land of confusion Joseph! I, like you, was quite confused about how to get the Bugsy designation.

Asking the folks with the supposed answers was an exercise in futility:
I PMed Carol...she initially seemed interested in getting the answer for me, but then she just dropped the ball. After a week or two w/o hearing from her, I reminded her I was still waiting for an answer.

Her reply was," I am getting conflicting answers". And that was it. No follow up. No real answer.

So I ran the same question by King Ron. His reply: "I'll have to ask our variety guy." And that was it. No follow up. No real answer!
So I PMed him again, asking for a follow up. No reply at all!

OK, I says, now I see why PCGS's customer service reps answers are often conlicting... no one KNOWS anything in the OC.

So, I jjust started submitting Bugsy's to see what would happen.

Here is the definitive answer to how to get BUgs Bunny Franklins designated:

There are actually two ways it can be done:

    1) You can submit as error or economy error. You do not have to pay the $15 variety designation fee. Just the error grading fee ($30 or $18). Your slab will look like this:

    2) You can submit as Variety Review. You must pay the $15 variety fee, as well as whatever grading fee for the tier you are submitting under. Your slab will look like this:
