$1000 Silver Bags

Who likes silver bags? I understand they weigh about 50lbs and have about 715 ounces of silver. Discuss the pros and cons as a way to own physical silver!

Bulky? Obviously!

But seems to be the way to own silver without paying huge premiums for rounds, bars or silver dollars.

Yes, they are large and bulky and somewhat awkward to store compared to standard 100 oz. bars. The premium for Englehard / JM 100 oz. bars isn't all that big to justify buying circ. silver bags IMO.

    jpkinla,

Are you going to pretend you're LaVere Redfield and start buying 100s of bags of silver and throwing them down your coal chute into the basement? image

    That's a peachy idea! image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • One advantage they have is that you don't have to sell the whole thing at one time lake you would for 100 oz bars, They are subdividable.

Massive Inflation or deflation they'll still have buying power. Either at face or silver content.

  • By far the best way to buy physical silver
#1 Lowest in and out premium of all popular recognized silver products.
#2 Refined by the best refiner in the world.,no authenticity problems.
#3 They have a US Legal tender status, so therefor exempt to many state sales tax.
#4 Easier to store anywahere as ypu can pour them into bottles or Odd shaped areas, try and do that with bars!
#5 When your bored you could search thru them for dates someone may have missed
#6 If a Silver Meteorite landed on earth and Silver became worthless you could still spend your silver coins for face
    #7 Your buying American
#8 You could sell just One silver dime or the whole deal, try sawing your bars or coins in half.
#9 They cannot be drilled and filled with lead as easy as bars (surprisingly not uncommon) and not worth tampering with or faking like silver rounds or bars.

Thats Just to name a few. By far the best bet for ANY silver investor on all levels and Its what I recomend and put my customers into.

I get the feeling that right now, silver is about as cheap as it will ever be. I like 90% bags for all of the reasons posted by Brian, especially the divisablity. If you buy well (Walkers versus Franklins and Kennedies, Mercury dimes versus Roosies), you can also pick up a little premium on selling.

A few years ago, I went through a Franklin bag with my daughter and we pulled out about 250 S-mints. At the time, Littleton was paying about a buck-and-a-half premium on them ( I paid ~3X face). Profit, $375. Time spent with my daughter, priceless.

What if the bag has all heavily worn coins-how does that affect the silver value?

A full bag of BU coins with no wear should contain 720 oz .999 Silver //
A circulated Bag is Figured at 715 oz .999 silver

Typicaly it is figured a circ bag should contain between 715-720 ozs .999 silver, Most all bag prices use the 715 figure, but another advantage of having a Bag is that you might get an extra 5 ozs you didnt pay for..heh

Also, Bags ARE the best and cheapest weigh to buy silver, Silver Eagles, MAples being the worst premium followed by recognized brand .999 Bars

Many times you can buy 90% silver bags near or less than melt!

If your dealer is putting you into eagles,maples,.999 bars than he is not doing you any favors.

When you buy $1000 silver bags, do you run them through a counting machine? Do you check for clads mixed in?

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

  • What's fun, is if you can buy a bag that was originally put together during the 80s run ups... we bought a couple bags from a guy (Who lost a TON of money because he bought silver in the late 80s run-up) recently, and we pulled out a number of decent Barber Halves, even a couple columbians, a good amount of VF+ Walkers. There was also a lot of dated SLQs in the half-bag of quarters... at that time, the silver was worth more than the numismatic value, so they went into bags...
