Guess the Grade on this 1886 Morgan Dollar--Grade Revealed!
I must say, even though it's white, I like this one... great lustre and strike. There are a few light marks on the cheek (including two small "craters," which look to be planchet flaws). Since the marks on the cheek were a little bit muted in the picture, I've given a blow-up of the cheek, and am also providing unresized images for you micrograders

<< <i>Just remember that the large picture of the cheek is a huge blow-up of the coin... the marks are there, but they're light. Crater probably wasn't the right word... >>
In that case, 66, maybe? But I still say they use it as an excuse to give it a 63 if it had an 'O' mint mark.
Morgans.I was always 1 or 2 points below the grade,
with marks as that one.So I say..66 hand down,lock.Has
to be

I've never seen an O-mint morgan with a strike like this down at 63 unless it was gashed

True. That would be a ridiculous O-mint strike. I guess they'd look for the faintest, most infinitesimal cabinet friction and call it 58, then.

When grading Morgans the the cheek is almost the be-all end-all of the grade, all other things being acceptable. This one is a magnificent looker that unfortunately almost appears as though someone exposed the cheek to the bar and pointed ends of a paper staple at some point. The 3 marks are in the only place the grade would be dramatically lowered to 64, although on luster it has a shot at 65 at NGC even with the noticable distraction. This shows you can collect gorgeous coins that are twice the eye appeal of 4 and 5 figure priced drab and boring superb gems.
<< <i>Accugrade in Des Moines? ...When did that happen? >>
A long, long, long time ago... before they were the ACG we know and... can't say love here...
Morgannut2... I'll respectfully disagree with you. I've seen a lot of 65s, and a lot of 66s. I've seen both grades with worse cheeks than this, especially on 65s. There is no doubt in my mind that this coin is a solid, high-end 65. When I get the chance, I'll show it in-hand to some people.
