Updated 10-12 - she's back with an email: Who would like to help "discourage" this Ebay sc

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
scam This same seller previously had two other rare gold coins listed, having misappropriated the images of the coins' true owner. After being alerted, (presumably) Ebay ended the listings for the other two coins, but did not NARU the seller.

The identical coin to the one linked above was sold in a legitimate public auction last year for $9000 plus. Yet, the Ebay seller is apparently willing to let it go for a fraction of its true worth, didn't know enough to make note of the fact that it's a High Relief, but did know enough to keep the identity of the bidders private so they can't be warned.

Unfortunately, I do not know the true current owner of the coin to be able to alert him, so that he can contact Ebay.

If you feel up to it, please join me in contacting the seller to let him/her know that people can get in serious trouble for doing what he/she is attempting. Please do not violate any Ebay policies in doing so, however.image

Apparently, this seller has a history of listing coins she doesn't own.

Too bad they can't even spell "PCGS" right. They'll lose a lot of hits by people searching for it.

And this? We do NOT accept Pay Pal Payments due to their BBB Report in just 36 months !!!!!

Translation: I'm trying to convince you that my lack of PayPal acceptance has nothing to do with this being a scam. Nope, nuh-uh, not at all. PayPal is the scam, not me. Whatever.

I'm surprised there's no excuse given for the private sale.

Well I'm gonna bid on the 1807- but where is the holder? Need to see the holder for authentication

Guess I'll ask that question now that I have bid on it.

This one sure responds to eMail quickly. I sent her this:

<< Many of us are aware that you do not own this coin. You have been reported to eBay for fraud. It would be in your own best interest to shut down this auction before the authorities do it for you. >>

Within minutes she came back with this:

<< BEING AS I HAVE THE COIN WHY WOULD I DO THAT??? ONLY ONE COIN WAS COMMING FROM A DROPSHIPPER AND THAT WAS REMOVED. >>

Note the all caps - yes, she's an AOL user.

I responded to that with this:

<< If you have the coin, then please scan it with a sticker with today's date and eMail me the image. >>

It'll be interesting to see her next response.

Here's the reply I received from her after I called her a liar for telling me she owned all of the coins she had listed, as I knew the true owner of two of them:

"the only LIAR here is YOU, You have only been on ebay a short while yet you want to slander myself and my coins. I guess this mistery man owns all my listings as well!!!!!!! well my lieing friend I have the exact coin listed so this make you the LIAR as i dont know you yet you claim to know the owner!!! Your claims have been forwarded to e-bay! under the harassment law, this means both and if you keep it up I will slap a law suit on you so fast for slander/ liable. Guess what, my boyfriend is an attorney and I will have him review your claims when her gets home tonight! Till them leave me ALONE!!!!!" imageimage

I guess she doesn't realize that it's "libel" not "liable" and that it's not either, when the other prerson is speaking the truth. image

    Item: 1807 $5 DRAPED AU 55 IN>>> NGC>>>> HOLDER (8340744484)
This message was sent while the listing was active.
    killerherman is a bidder.

Is it possible for you to send a picture of this coin in the NGC holder along with it's cerification number.

I sent this just 30 seconds ago- let us see if she responds.

<< Is it possible for you to send a picture of this coin in the NGC holder along with it's cerification number. >>

That doesn't accomplish much, if anything, unfortunately. She has a history misappropriating images of coins in holders with their ID numbers too, as in the case of the High Relief currently listed.

I understand what you're saying Mark- but if she produces the cert- logically we might be able to see if NGC has a record as to who originally had it slabbed and when- may take awhile but who knows.

No response at this time. I see an ebayer possibly going crooked here shortly.

    Boy oh boy.

I registered here at CU just because of this subject!

There was at least one previous post on this specific seller. I have shared multiple emails back and forth with her - if anyone is interested, I will post them here.

I'm and old collector - hoarder :-); please be gentle with me - note that this is my first post.

Been lurking for a while, I feel like I know some of you already.

I've enjoyed the education thus far.

I like that idea, but based upon my email exchange with her, I don't think I'm the one to do it.image

Unless the original submitter currently owns the coin, that wont get us very far. Please don't get me wrong - I'm not at all opposed to people asking about things like that. However, I wouldn't want someone to think it was safe to bid on an item, just because the seller came up with an image of a holder and legitimate ID number.

I don't know Russ well enough to poke at him, but it does remind me of the schoolyard 35 years ago...

This issue of "dropshippers" is gonna kill Ebay, IMO. Hard enough to keep one seller accountable, but now they can blame a third party?

The only way I'd do anything over $500.00 on Ebay would be with Escrow.

And what is with this womans' spelling? She needs to lay off the crank pipe for awhile.

    I just sent this message...

Hello - I would like to bid on your coin, but need proof you own the coin and it is in your possession. How can you do this?? I guess the simplest way is by sending me several scanned or photographed images with dates and times. If you can think of a better way, that's fine. I'm not trying to be a pain, but I like the coin and have seen many scams. I've actually had to take someone to court before. It was not fun. Anyway - Thanks in advance!

A couple of witty exchanges with our erstwhile seller:

    Hi Marla,

"Every other" coin that you have sold "for him" hasn't
been a high end ($10,000.00+) coin sold at $9.99
starting price with no reserve, either!

And yes, some of the "dropshipper" setups are just
    that - setups - scams!

You've only been selling since May 2005, so I don't
look at you as having a great deal of experience in
    being "set-up" yourself.

I sent you a link to Coin Universe yesterday, where
they were intrigued by your auctions :-)

By the way, the actual Ebay listing number for the
    1813 $5 Gold you had listed was 8326505318 - it's
still an active "Buy it Now" listing. So much for the
"dropshipper" actually having the coin - it belongs to
    Anaconda!

    Will you actually look?

    Keith

    her reply
Sure I will look, not a problem

    ANOTHER GEM:

    Marla,

I'll ask again - do you have the high end coins that
you are auctioning in your hands? (you previously said
that you didn't, that they were coming from a
    "dropshipper").

The "dropshipper" is giving you information on coins
    owned by other people.

I believe that s/he is running a scam.

    Is THAT clear enough?

    Keith

    her replies

No Keith it isnt "CLEAR ENOUGH" being as every other coin that I have sold he has delivered. That what "DROPSHIPPERS" do. over 75% of the members dont have an item in their hands either.....are they running scams as well???????????

How do you figure the coins listed belongs to other people??? Every coin I have listed he has verified that he DOES HAVE

    And finally,

Sorry... didn't really expect you to be. It's just
that you responded to my first message so quickly.

Look - I'm pretty sure that you are not intentionally
involved in running a scam- but why, if you don't have
the coin in hand, do you not cancel this auction?

It is apparent that your "dropshipper" IS running a
scam, so why be a party to it - especially when you
have now been made aware of the scam and could be
    considered to be complicit?

    Keith

    her reply

Keith, what scam are you talking about !!!!!!!!!!! Nobody is running a scam !!!! Hell I even stopped 2 of my auctions today to relist cause I listed the incorrect photo

Sorry, sort of reverse order... figure it out if you want to.

Geez! Why do people bid with sellers like this without even looking at feedback. First page, 2 negs. One for what the buyer has ID'd as a fake gold chain.

    Title: " 14 k *** GOLD **** 30 INCH CHAIN NECKLESS !!! Item number: 5027746262 "

    "Neckless". Now that's funny.

Where's our forum phantom high bidders to take these coin auctions sky high? Ha!

Well, she responded to my request:

<< First off I dont know who you think you are !!! I dont have to prove ANYTHING to you. Normally this wouldn't be a problem however being as your not the one bidding on it, and basically called me a thief & liar im not even going to waist my time when i dont have to! >>

    To which I responded:

<< I knew that would be your response. You have just proven that you do not own this coin. Interstate fraud is a Federal offense. You'd better stock up on cigarettes because you're going to jail. >>

I bid on her 1813 Bust Half Eagle.... I even asked if she would consider selling it outright and taking it off of auction, which she was, but then when I asked for the PCGS certification verification number, the emails stopped image. And all I wanted was that MS63 for a couple hundred. ( CV=20 grand ).

What about contacting PCGS and ask them to contact the owner of the coin if it is registered.
Or if it is stolen PCGS is a good place to start.
Either way 42 sales with 2 neg, is not horrific. Now if she really does not own the gold coin she is currently selling,
that is fraud and could be a big problem for her!
