Can You Spot the Artificially Toned Franklins???? - Yet Another AT vs. NT WINNER AND ANSWERS ANNOUNC

Here are some Franklin Half Dollars. At least One of them is holdered. The others are raw. Two I know for sure to be NT. The other two for sure I know are AT. Think you can determine which is which?

Tell me what you think each Franklin is "AT, NT" and whether or not it is holdered. Please provide some reasoning for your answers. The first 5 correct guesses will be entered into a drawing for the slabbed Frankie. image

This ought to be interesting. image

Ok, Here are the answers.

Surprisingly, only 1 person got it right. Several were close but only one got all the AT/NT's and which one was holdered. It is amazing how similar these toning patterns are. I was very surprised that most thought my egg AT job for Frankie #1 was really NT. Also, I was surprised at some folks were using the premise of fingerprints on coins to determine if it had been slabbed or not. image

Ronyahski - Please PM me your address so I can send you the slabbed frankie. image

Franklin #1 = AT I know because I AT'ed it myself during an experiment using a tupperware container 1 boiled egg and some napkins. I left it in there for about 12 hours.

Franklin #2 = AT Also because I AT'ed it myself using the same egg and tupperware from the first AT job. Only this time I dried out the eggs and replaced the napkins so that not as much moisture would be in there. The result was a toned coin with no impairment to the luser, at least on the side that was down (reverse). The side that was up seemed to have some luster impairment but still retained much more luster than Frankie #1. I left this coin in the container for 1 week. Boy when I opened it in the house, my wife got really upset because of the smell so I went and threw it in a trashcan outside. image

Franklin #3 = NT (but with problems) If you recognized the toning pattern from some old green PCI slabs, you would have known that Franklin #3 was probably white when it was holdered but the plastic insert was apparently not inert and I believe the coin would get bagged or not cross for environmental damage if sent to either NGC or PCGS.

Franklin #4 = NT It was an end-roll toner that I had with the lincoln cents about 2 months ago.

Franklin #5 = NT It was the other end of the same roll that Frankie #4 was in about 2 months ago.

    Here's my LAST guess...

    Coin 1 - AT
    Coin 2 - AT
    Coin 3 - NT
    Coin 4 - NT - Slabbed
    Coin 5 - NT

    NICE PIC's image

    Yup, great pics.

I guess #2 and #3 are AT. I've never seen one like #3 before and #2 looks blotchy to me as if it were toned by a liquid quickly rather than by atmosphere over time.

I guess #4 is slabbed because it looks higher quality with a better strike than #1 or #5.

If I was grading them all 5 would get bagg'd.

I will say that I believe coin #5 is the coin that is slabb'd.

My reasoning is because of coloring and placement of toning.

I agree - those photos really rock PG!

I agree with Lucy...but that doesn't mean that some won't grade...here's how I would grade without seeing the coin in hand:

    1. AT
    2. AT
    3. AT
    4. AT...but it's probably slabbed
    5. NT slabbed

Franklin 1: NT - looks like it lays right
Franklin 2: AT - splotchy liquid like borders
Franklin 3: AT - harsh borders
Franklin 4: NT - smooth transitions, looks like it was in an envelope
Franklin 5: AT - army green is a bad sign

    I guess #4 is holdered as a 64

1 & 5 - Both NT. Nobody would bother doctoring such low grade uncs, and the colors are passable.

2 - AT Unnatural looking pattern and the spots.

3- AT Never seen a real one even remotely like it

4- NT Because it has a good look . And holdered because you can see the fingerprints the sonic guy left on it.image

Remember that 1960s frankies did not come in cardboard holders for mint set. They won't get that mint set tone naturally without being placed into older mint set holders.

#1 - NT. It looks like the typical stuff that forms on a raw coin left exposed for too long.

    #2 - At. Damaged.

#3 - AT, looks like a liver of sulphur job. There is no blending of toning, and the borders look abrupt. Funky color.

#4 - NT and holdered. Looks pretty natural to me, and I could imagine it as an endroller.

#5 - AT and may be holdered. Looks very much like a mint set coin. Well done, almost. They came in cello flat packs in 63.

    Here are my answers:

    1. Looks NT to me, but not high enough grade to get slabbed.
    2. Looks NT to me, but would get bodybag for environmental damage.
    3. Looks AT to me, the color stops too abruptly to be NT
    4. Looks AT to me, because the band of untoned area around the rim looks suspicious to me.
    5. Looks NT and the most likely one to be holdered in this group.

#3 is AT. The "black stuff" on #4 looks like over use of too much sulfur which typically happens when someone screws up a sulfur AT job. I suppose it could happen naturally, but I doubt it. The reverse of #4 does not appear to be AT to me. But due to the obv, I'm gonna say that #3 is AT and #4 are AT. matteproof

Yes, for environmental damage. I've seen many SAE's in this type of holder from this era with the same problem. Some have a very strong Gold/Pink ring around the periphery that is just as sharp as the pink ring on this one.

Brandon - Thanks for taking the time on this very informative post. I haven't seen one of those "NT" PCI coins in a while. For all those that said AT, can't say that they were wrong either. Funkier than the not so eggsellent toning on #1 and #2! I'll send a pm and thanks for the prize!
