Some new type clips to share

Since I had the camera out, Itook a few pictures of some recent acquisitions. While work on my Lincoln cent clip set has ground to a halt (can't find the coins I need anywhere), I've managed to keep growing my type set.

Starting off, a clipped 1859 Indian Cent. A tough one year type, I went eight years without even hearing of a clip when two of these showed up in the marketplace simultaneously (one on eBay and this coin). It only set me back $18, though I probably would have paid five times that. This coin completed my cent type set (major types only) back to 1796, eventually I'll remember how to take a decent photo and I'll post pics of the entire set.

Next is a seated dime courtesy of Heritage, an 1875-CC graded PCGS EF45. Lousy picture, but there is a tiny rim clip at K-7. This is the first Carson City coin in my type set, and I have to think any clips are rare from that mint. You have to love a high grade, branch mint, obsolete type error coin with a purchase price under $75. image

Last but not least, a 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar with a huge clip. This one was an eBay score, the seller had low feedback and didn't list it in the error category, which kept most of my usual competition at bay. This was also one of my better snipes ever, as I placed my final bid with two seconds remaining and won the coin by ten cents.

Nice, but I am not sure if that $ coin is real or not from the picture.

  • That's a very dramatic clip on the Sac.

I have a small rim clip on an Indian similar to that one, although mine is not a CN. Does it add to the value? I would say my coin is an XF 40. I can't remember the date but I think it was in the 80's.

The photo of the dollar coin doesn't do it any justice, in the hand the clip is unquestionably real. The edge inside the clip has the requisite cut/tear line, and there is an ever-so-slight hint of Blakesley effect. The rim shows slight weakening at the edge of the clip, though for some reason on large clips like this it's not as prevalent as on smaller clips.

Here is a similar coin in Fred Weinberg's inventory, his is in a PCGS holder. Compare the rim, the shape of the clip, and the design features at the ege of the clip and the coins are nearly identical.

Nice coins Sean. The Sac is quite dramatic. I'm noticing that these don't have the "Blakesly effect". Why do some clips have these and some don't? I have looked at picking up clips in the past but was hesitant to acquire ones without the flattened rim opposite of the clip. I realize of course that someone could just hammer the rim to represent this but it tends to be one of the first things I look for. Any thoughts? Thanks.
