2005 Mint Sets - Really nice

DeepCoinDeepCoin Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭
I just purchased a 2005 Mint set. The satin finish is VERY nice. There will probably be a run on these, I recommend buying early and often. I have mine in hand as I bought it over the counter in DC.

Are all the coins with the "new" finish?

I too have seen these - wow!

Given how beautiful they look, plus the fact they contain two very popular, 1 year only nickels that are notoriously difficult to obtain in high grades through rolls, as well halves and dollar coins that will not be made in any great quantities for circulation, and also the fact that by nature of the finish, this is a first year variety of sorts - what's the word I'm looking for? What's one more than a trifecta?

Spoof? Why would it be? DeepCoin is a trustworthy poster.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

This is NOT a hit and run spoof. The coins are on sale in DC at a couple of place over the counter. You can buy them at Union Station or at the U.S. Mint headquarters on 9th St. I do not have a camera, but suffice it to say, the coins are a real matte finish. I am not certain about the Sac, and the penny looks good, but a bit odd. The silver coins are all a nice matte finish. These should be VERY popular. Let's see what others say when they get their coins.

Yes all the coins have the new finish - they look sort of the nickel that came out in the Coin & Currency set a few years back.

This is no spoof. I was able to see these myself and I couldn't believe it. This is a whole new kind of Mint set!

It's just that the post comes as many are struggling to buy these from the U.S. Mint web site, and showing their frustrations here on the board.

It kinda came across as a "neener neener neener" type thing image

Sometimes the wait is better than the arrival.

I got mine last year in Union Station. It's a nice little booth sized store the mint has. Hardly ever a wait there either.
Thanks for the first hand report DeepCoin. I'll be waiting for mine in the mail this year image. I just don't get into DC much any more.

what is special about the satin finish? the satin finish on every coin set, or only specially this year?

Those who have seen them. Look at the Sac in this thread I posted. Does it look like that?

The surface is even more even, and the color more subdude. Not to sound sensational, but they really reminded me of old matte gold.

Seems to me there was a matte nickel in a C & C set a few years back - that might make for a good comparrison.

This is only on the mint sets right now and is planned to be retained in future years.

The U. S. Mint web site has them for sale now. I just bought 20 sets. I hope their is a run on these.
  • what was the quality of the coins?
  • itsnotjustmeitsnotjustme Posts: 8,779 ✭✭✭
Coldice, great question. Are they struck this way then ejected into the scratch ding rub and spot machine, or do they land on soft velvet trays and get lovingly moved to their protective mylar?

After what happened last year, the mint said they would mint as many as needed for orders.
You would do better to hope there is NO run on them and that less people buy them because they are whining about something.

Then, next year, they will be worth more.

For what it's worth, the mint site does say, "limited quantity". How much that is, who knows. Maybe a million or two. Point is, if you want them, buy them.

They could probably get their production back up to two million if they had the orders.

I'm guessing mintage will be around 1.8, though this may change as more information becomes available.

Odds are that there will be very few changes other than the appearance imparted by chromed dies.
