Discovered two new VAMs - Morgan and Peace - Letter came today!
Got a letter from Leroy Van Allen this morning. I sent him four coins last week. Two are known, but the other two are new VAM discoveries!!! These are my 2nd and 3rd. I found a 1900-O VAM 2C in February of this year. For some reason, I seem to much happier and excited than my wife.
The four coins... one was a later die state for an existing VAM; the description is being udpated to include heavy die polishing lines. Another coin was a recent discovery that's listed in the 2004 VAM Supplement. Somehow I missed seeing this one.
The new ones...
Morgan - 1921-S VAM 1M with a bean shaped die break inside the lower loop of the second S in STATES (mentioned in this thread).
Peace - 1923-P VAM 1AH with die file lines on reverse. Oddly enough, I sent this in because of the severe clashing on both sides. There are a couple of rays near the T in TRUST, and there are several rays spiking off of Liberty's foreheard. The reverse is covered. You can rotate the coin and see Liberty's chin and almost follow the outline of her head. Some of the clashing is removed by polishing lines... which is the diagnostic for the VAM. On Peace dollars, only clashed "letters or long spikes from the eagle's right shoulder" through the N are uniquely identified with VAM numbers. Had some pictures in an earlier post.... though it's tough to see all of the clashing.
Check out your 1921-S Morgans. My new 1M is very circulated and no die cracks show. I'd be interested to see an uncirculated 21-S 1M.
Thanks for letting me share!

Are you slabbing them as discovery coins?

<< <i>That bean break on the 21-S also appears on at least 2 vams on 21-D coins as well. Interesting. Are you slabbing them as discovery coins? >>
When I picked this up, I thought it was a 21-D 5B at first. I have a 5B and compared the die chip. It's slightly different. Do you want to see some side by side photos?
Not sure about slabbing. I've never slabbed anything and don't belong to any group. I like the idea of "Discovery" coins.
<< <i>I don't remember the 1900 o 2c have pics >>
Here are some pictures....
I'd also like to thank you for taking the time to post scans of the new pieces along with Leroy's descriptions. Those are really great coins.
