Auburn MA show report - VAMers paradise

I made to the show around 10am, one half hour after opening, which is pretty good because I was drinking A LOT a night before including multiple tequila shots and I came home at 3am. When I came the show was packed, you could not move between tables, I had to walk around to get to the back tables where Ernie and Darin reside. Ernie was set up, Darin was not. I went through both of their inventories alas sadly they had nothing worth cherrypicking.
Let me post first the coin I bought last (I had money left over) hopefully I can score on this one, the "scrape" on the cheek is not as bad it's hardly visible, I do not think it's a vam. This was the best looking peace dollar in the case I went through
1934-P peace
I'm a sucker for well struck Morgans and I could not stop myself buying these for $50 apiece, each coin has either PL obv or rev
1880-S #1
1880-S #2
I also bought this weird looking 1888-O, what makes this coin unusual is the polishing lines you can see them (barely) on the cheek going from 10 - 5 o clock and you can see them on above eagle's head going from 8 - 2 o clock (quite strong actually on both sides)
1888-O Morgan
Now let's get to the vams PLEASE HELP IF YOU KNOW THESE VAMS - something for everybody first 1922-P, you cannot see it clearly but there is a horizontal gouge between the rays, to the lest of B right above the tiara
1922-P peace
Now 1922-D with really cool die breaks
1922-D peace
This 1921 Morgan HAS to be a vam, I added a small magnification of the area in interest, there is a ton of die cracks on the coin as well, and a small cud inside 2 in date
1921 Morgan
I'm getting fascinated with die pitting. This is a good example this coin has small pitting patches all other the place the date, all the starts to the right, E PLURIBUS UNUM, wheat in the hairpiece, which looks so cool, sorry pic sucks
1880-O Morgan
Here's another pitting example 1921 Morgan, It's not top 100 but a cool pitting example: here's the pic
1921 Morgan with pitting
Also I found two Morgans in VF+ condition 1888-O and 1889-O Oval O VAM TOP 100
and so you toner lovers don't get mad here's one for ya
1878-S Morgan

I'll do the pics for you of the oval O when I get home tonight
  • I know that I've probably asked this a million times, but does the Auburn show have any currency dealers or coin guys with some paper for sale? I should try to check out the show one of these days, but I've been doing way too much travelling on the Masspike each week this winter/spring, so I've been avoiding having to drive on that boring highway on my weekends.

You had a great show. The Peace Dollars are die cracks w/o a break. They may have vam numbers, but I'm not familiar with them.

The 1921-P has a heck of a break from A of AMERICA. That's a recent discovery and has been talked about here on the boards before. Premo coin! The pitted reverses are listed here: 1921-P Pitted reverses

    Nice finds.

The 1921 P Morgan with the die break is VAM 32A. I have two of them that I bought in the last few months.

The 1922 P Peace is a Top 50 coin. I think it is 1A or 5A. I forget off hand since I don't have the book in front of me, but I do know it is one of the Top 50. Nice looking coin, too.

sadysta1, I find the different O's on Morgans interesting. The ones you added look a lot like the ones posted on
    this site.

I don't have a VAM book yet and cannot determine for sure, but seems there are three different O's for the 1889.
Not sure though. With only two listed at the site posted above. The round O and the medium oval O, that I believe are like yours. Then I have this one, an eliptical O or large oval O. Hopefully someone can help with this.

Then here's this 1889 O, which I had down as the normal round O mint mark.

  • The 1921 with the die break over the A is a 1921-P VAM-32A. Look at the id page here on my web site:

Not bad at all. As Rob said, the 1921 with the spike atop the A is the VAM 32A (also has some quadrupled obverse stars). The 1922 Peace dollar is a VAM 1A, which is a Top 50 Peace dollar variety that weighs in at about $40 in BU. The 1922-D is VAM 2R, a 2003 discovery that probably carries a 2-3x premium in the right market. The 1921 Morgan with pitted reverse is VAM 3E, very modest premium. The 1888-O is probably VAM 17, although I'm not sure just how far left of normal the date is. Check for doubling on the 1 (VAM 5) or last 8 (VAM 6). Both of these are more scarce than the VAMs 2 and 17. The 1889-O doesn't quite look like an oval O as much as it does a heavily punched, partially filled round O.
